Les Deplorábles

I can’t think that this bodes well for Team Blue this fall: residents of communities where wealthy New Yorkers have second/vacation homes have had about enough of the epidemic carpetbagging:

People with second homes in the Catskills region of New York are being warned to stay away in venom-laced Facebook posts and blunt messages from county officials.

Boardwalks and beaches in some Jersey Shore towns are barricaded, and residents are urging the closure of coastal access bridges to outsiders.

In the Hamptons, the famous playground for the rich on the East End of Long Island, locals are angry that an onslaught of visitors has emptied out grocery store shelves.

A backlash has grown on the outskirts of the New York region as wealthy people flee to summer homes to avoid the densely packed city, which has become the epicenter of the coronavirus crisis.

This clash between year-round residents and those with the means to retreat to vacation homes intensified Tuesday as White House officials advised those who had passed through or fled New York City to place themselves in a 14-day quarantine.

“They’re pumping gas. They’re stopping at grocery stores,” said Kim Langdon, 48, of Ashland, New York. “If they’re infected and they don’t know it, they’re putting everyone at risk.”

The expletive-filled commentary on a Catskills Facebook page was less subtle.

“The only cases in Greene County were brought here from downstate people so stay down there,” one man wrote. “Just because you have a second home up here doesn’t mean you have the right to put us at risk.”

The paraable of the Ant and the Grasshopper seems, if not appropriate, at least timely.

  1. I read a story last week that the 99th Precinct of the NYPD, has been ticketing and impounding trucks and trailers full of goods. With so many truck and rest stops closed by ignorant left wing Governors, the drivers are pulling over to catch a couple of hours of sleep. This area is populated by hoity toity NIMBY Democrats, who complain to the police that the vehicles are parked there, illegally. So, instead of a police officer using his or her judgement and either letting them stay for a couple of hours or, at a minimum, politely informing the driver that they can’t park there, they ticket them, impound the vehicles and brag about it on the precincts Fakebook page. It should be pointed out that these trailers are filled with groceries, paper goods and even medical supplies. Because some precinct chief went Gestapo due to public pressure, these supplies are now tied up for God knows how long. Further, since many truck drivers are paid for delivered loads, it interferes with their livlihood. I know that if I’m a truck driver, I organize a strike against that community and just don’t deliver stuff there.

  2. Just to belay any worries, Pinch Sulzberger has made it safely to his home in Southampton. Ever the generous soul, he has also invited the clever and articulate Maureen Dowd to join him – though she agreed to remain in isolation at the guest house for two weeks.

  3. I endorse this kind of behavior and encourage it’s adoption everywhere.

  4. The Big Island’s numbers are good. The latest:
The number of active cases for Hawaii Island is 6. These 6 individuals are quarantined at home and are being monitored by the Department of Health. At this date for Hawaii Island no one infected by this virus had to be hospitalized. The total number of people tested positive for Hawaii Island is 11 with 5 recovered and cleared by the Department of Health.

  5. At Nate Silver’s 538 site, which aggregates and analyzes polls, There are graphs for all the approval ratings of our presidents going back to Eisenhower. The graphs show wild swings for various times in a person’s administration.

Bush was close to 90% approval after 911 and was down in the 30’s when he left. Clinton was all over the place and even the sainted Obama visited the high 30’s after the failed roll out of the ACA. Trump’s rating is so consistent it looks like the EKG of a dead man. Nothing, not Charlottesville, not Helsinki, not the farm bankruptcies, not the stock-market crash or a blundering, response to the Coronavirus affects his approval rating.

Another way to read this poll is that its Biden 49% Trump 47% at the height of what should be Trump’s “rally effect”.

  6. Liberals continue to insist the virus is more deadly than President Trump admits, that it will take longer to beat, and we’re not doing enough.

It’s too risky to have millions of people stand in line to vote for President. We’ll simply have to postpone the elections for a few years until the crisis is over. President Trump will relinquish power as soon as it’s safe.

    What could go wrong?

  7. Why am I not surprised that the “experts” who have promoted subsidizing green energy at an enormous political and economic cost utterly failed to foresee the lives and economic damage that would be wrought by this pandemic? They were all for subsidizing the purchase of Chinese solar panels, but stockpiling respirators and n95 masks? Not so much. Too expensive, no need.

  8. Althouse comments on the news that USNS Comfort has arrived in NY today, and helpfully reminds us that Rhodes scholar Rachel Maddow told us on March 20, in response to Trump’s promise that Comfort would arrive in NY this week:
“There’s no sign that they’ll be anywhere on site helping out anywhere in the country for weeks yet. The president said when he announced that those ships would be put into action against the COVID-19 epidemic. He said one of those ships would be operational in New York harbor by next week. That’s nonsense. It will not be there next week.”

    Stupidest elites in history.

  9. So it’s not just Rhode Island protecting it’s state border, but counties in upstate New York and the Hamptons, plus northern MN, that are telling urban dwellers to stay in their sh*thole cities?

  10. Just chatted with my BIL on the East Coast. He is in Delaware at his girlfriend’s house. He has a chemo session in Jersey on Wednesday, and is not sure yet how to get there with the travel restrictions.
