What Hath Will Farrell Wrought?

By Mitch Berg

It was fun finding this vid of Elvis Costello doing a song from back before he tried to turn into Burt Bacharach.

Cool vid, cool performance, one of the great songs in pop history.

And yet during the last verse/chorus or two…

intrusive cowbell!

There was just…no need for that.

What’s so funny ’bout peace, love and understanding? Angryclown sure doesn’t know, but damned if they don’t make the milk shoot out of his nose every time.

The only cure for Angryclown is…More Cowbell!!!

Actually, he said, ruining the fun with humorless pedantry, Elvis always wanted to be Burt Bacharach; on the great Stiff Records Live tour of ’77, he sang “My Funny Valentine,” and even introduced it as “a song by Hal David and Burt Bacharach” to stunned and drunken silence.

    James,

I love that story. And yep, I know EC wanted BE BB – but I figured that was a pretty well-beaten path.

This is my earliest memory of EC….

I thought he was wearing a black suit, but my memory failed me…..
