Tide Pod Evita: Pettifogger

Rep. Alexandria “Tide Pod Evita” Ocasio Cortez may be this year’s socialist flavor of the month, a would-be disruptor of American politics.

But in another very important way, she seems to be very much business-as-usual; there’s evidence that, like (it seems) most Democrats from New York City, she’s corrupt as the day is long.

Almost too hard to pick a single pullquote from this long, laboriously researched piece. You should read it all.

But here’s an important bit:

Regardless of whether or not [Ocasio Cortez’ boyfriend Riley] Roberts was officially AOC’s spouse [at the time her campaign staff showed him on salary], it seems probable [Ocasio Cortez’ benefactor, strategist and now chief of staff Saikat] Chakrabarti was reimbursing her for her campaign expenses off-books. Brand New Congress PAC simply served as a pass-through to do so.
When AOC won, she then hired Chakrabarti, her strategist/patron, as her Chief of Staff. Taking money from a rich guy, trying to hide it by passing it through a PAC, and then giving her benefactor a government job.
That’s definitely unethical and potentially illegal. Chakrabarti may have made an illegal campaign contribution in excess of federal limits. Regardless, it raises questions about Chakrabarti’s hiring as AOC’s Chief of Staff after her election. Maybe add that to your next lightning round, Congresswoman.

  1. This is, as you say, quite well researched and very informative. It’s also a waste of time, at least as a stand alone indictment. Mogadishu Barbie has been fingered for the same type sh1t, and she has waved it off, as will TPE. Why> Because every politician plays these kinds of games with their campaign funds. I mean, come on, you’ve got control of millions of dollars, there’s cash flying in all directions; you’re not going to wet some friendly beaks? It’s so common, it’s only ever brought up as the last ditch tactics of failing candidates.

That doesn’t mean it completely worthless, though. The carefully documented trail of crumbs identify people who could become involved in more highly visible corruption allegations…including those of TPE herself.

  2. “Well, at least she didn’t marry her brother.” Maybe Gabriel Ocasio-Cortez isn’t interested in girls – but you never know there’s still time.

  3. Just saw this:
The conspiracy machine is in full effect & it’s been disappointing to watch professionals get duped + amplify unvetted Medium posts as truth, treating journalism like it’s a high school Livejournal rumor mill or something.

No, I don’t shadily pay my boyfriend. Come on & VET. ⬇️ https://t.co/EY28Elj6aG

She’s obviously not taking the accusation seriously, in fact she’s using the same non-denial, denial that Mogadishu Barbie uses regarding her husband/brother. They don’t care, because they have been informed it’s a nothing burger by people who know a nothing burger when they see one.

  4. The bright side of this, really, is that she’s proving that you cannot trust socialists to spend your money the way they tell you they’re going to spend it. Her own life is a powerful indictment against her politics.

And I must confess that I had the same thought that MacArthur Wheeler did…..

  5. To respond to Swiftee’s first comment about ‘millions of dollars flying everywhere’, this hasn’t been the case with AOC so far as she is a noob to the game. Remember her complaining about having to find the money to rent a DC apartment? She hasn’t had the time to siphon PAC dollars into her own assets yet- she was tending bar a few months ago. To me this means some idyllic freshman with (stupid) wild ideas has already given in to the seduction of ‘black holing’ money for herself/others. That’s the only reason this is a story- because she dove head first into the swamp before even being elected!

  7. Given that AOC is living rent-free in most all conservative heads, it seems to me that she’s economically astute — how many of her critics like this yipping ankle biter chihuahua op-ed piece get free rent?

  8. PaulM, do you really believe she was homeless…even for a second?

What she meant was, she didn’t have the time yet to find a spot like the Navy Yard Apartment Building, where it costs $1,840 per month for a 440 square foot studio; and she ain’t living in a studio, you can be sure.

She’s hauling in a guaranteed $174k per year which is more than me and Mrs. Swiftee make, and we live pretty well. Any bank would have lent her a few thousand, unsecured.

It was just her “chopping it up” again with the idiots that elected her.

  9. Swiftee I agree with you that she was hamming it up about the rent to get attention, but the fact she brought it up to begin with tells me that she wasn’t already loaded coming into the gig. The only reason this is a story is because of how quickly she was corrupted- it didn’t take years of wearing her down while watching others reap the benefits. It took like 2-3 months before she said ‘screw it im in!’

As a side note of being a 30yr old home owner who paid off his student loans through hard work 2 years out of school, borrowing is bad. I wish more politicians could see the writing on the wall…
