“Smart Appliances” are a bit like non-incandescent light bulbs, aren’t they? The old ones worked well enough and consumers were happy with them, but the profit margin was close to zero. Industry demanded the ban on incandescent light bulbs; consumers liked them just fine. With the ban in place, manufacturers could use the law to make more profit — proprietary manufacturing processes, intellectual property, etc.
How much of a leap in performance (and profit margin) can you get on a washer/dryer. a refrigerator, or a hot water tank? Those inventions are a century old. So you are going to get smart appliances whether you want them or not. Industry will demand it.
