well he’s a petulant little tosser for sure. Given his mastery of the irrelevant and the inconsequential I can understand why the novel he’s been working on for 10years isn’t done!

Not only is it not surprising he’s not finished his novel, he’s going to have trouble getting it published, since going to a party in a neighborhood that’s nicer than your own is a great way to make contacts with people who might be able to help you at the publishing house.
Really, what ever happened to the notion that in a new situation, you apply what Mamma taught you? Or, as some football coach said to young players prone to excessive celebration, “Act like you’ve been there before.” If you do, you’re far more likely to go there again.
