Best Wishes

One of my great inspirations has to be Tony Snow.

Two years ago, he came down with colon cancer.  Like a lot of people (of all political walks), I sent him a “get well soon” email; I’ve long respected Snow’s chops as a radio guy.

His email in response was truly a gift of insight into dealing with difficult times.  I’ll find it and share it one of these days, if it survived the last couple of system crashes.

It’s a shock to see he’s apparently going back for more surgery, to remove another abominable abdominal growth.

And it’s good to see that good people still know what comes first:

“The biggest problem you have sometimes with cancer is flat-out fear,” Snow said. “When you see an Elizabeth Edwards saying, ‘I’m going to embrace life and I’m going to move forward,’ that is a wonderful thing.”

After hearing the news, John and Elizabeth Edwards called Snow, during a refueling stop on their way to Los Angeles, to express their support and concern, said Edwards adviser Jennifer Palmieri.

Snow’s news is by no means necessarily bad – they don’t know it’s a relapse – but please keep him and his family alongside the Edwardses in your prayers, wishes or what have you.

Of course, the Edwardses – for all I disagree with their politics – have more class in their pinkie fingers than do some of their supporters, expressing their wishes for Snow over at the Huffpo, for whom prayers of a different sort might be in order:

“Sure holding all that bulls**t in your gut would make anybody sick..!”

– “The growth in his abdomen is his head stuck up his a**. F**k him!! He is pure lying scum and should die ASAP!!”

– “You can only swallow so much…………can you say karma……………..”

And some of my favorites:

We wouldn’t want Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh to express outrage for us huffposters saying something mean about Tony.

Just kidding….Tony Snow is giving birth to Dick Cheney’s alien-baby as we speak!

To be fair, it’s not all bile:

I would be ashamed to be a liberal huffposter today. Let’s hear from the kind people here.
Even though I don’t agree with the man’s politics he showed class yesterday after Elizabeth Edwards revelation about her reoccuring cancer. I wish him well.
It takes all kinds, dunnit?

  1. By the gods, all sides have their scum.

Can’t we just agree to ignore them or something? Let them echo chamber in their own mean minds?

  2. Unfortunately, Phaedrus, the internet, and blogs in particular, are the great equalizer, or perhaps the greatest bullhorn ever invented. Everyone, no matter the content of their thoughts, can now make those thoughts loud and clear to all.

The very definition of mixed blessing, really.

  3. My exchange with Tony, it was February 2005″

    Mr. Snow:

I can’t say that I watch you and I can’t say that I am a fan, but I CAN care.

My hopes and prayers go out to you and your family as you travel this difficult road. All my hopes for a quick and speedy recovery.

Thanks for the kind e-mail. It means even more to me because you’re not a “fan.” I have been amazed, but not completely surprised, by the goodness and decency of people I encounter. You fit that mold, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Best,

    Tony Snow

  4. This sort of stuff bring out the class in a lot of folks. Good on all of them. I’m no fan of the politics of either John or Elizabeth Edwards, but I think they’ve conducted themselves with class and integrity in this, and unreservedly wish them well in their fight against this disease.
