“Conservatives hate women” is conventional wisdom…
…among people who aren’t all that wise
– in this case, Politico’s Meredith Shiner and Glenn Thrush:
But the growing schism between the Republican Party’s ascendant right wing and its shrinking moderate core has clear gender undertones — and Scozzafava’s departure raises fresh questions about the GOP’s ability to recruit, elect and even tolerate the sort of moderate women who used to be part of its ruling mainstream.
While Republicans scored a pair of impressive electoral victories in New Jersey and Virginia with solid support among female voters, the events of the last week offer harbingers of serious trouble ahead with the largest swing voter bloc in the country — women.
Right. Because Dede Scozzafava is the only woman in the GOP.
As opposed to Sarah Palin and Sarah Palin? Or – here in Minnesota – conservative movement stalwarts Pat Anderson and Laura Brod?
Rob Port from Say Anything:
The problem with this analysis? It’s awfully selective. It leaves out people like Arlen Spector and Lindsey Graham, both frequent targets ofthe conservative base. And it also leaves out Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, both very popular figures within the resurgent conservative movement.
If the tea party movement had a problem with women, why would people like Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann figure so prominently in it? And why wouldthe opposition to so-called “RINOS” or ‘moderates” include both men and women?
Leave aside the fact that many of the Tea Parties – including the Twin Cities’ ones – are largely organized by…women?
Politico has a conclusion in search of data.
It’s an important conclusion, especially if you’d rather that women not think too much about the ways that Democrats treat women. Especially recent presidents.
“Conservatives hate women” is conventional wisdom”
Bzzztt.. you’ve been fined one credit for creating bogus strawman arguments.
The ‘conventional’ wisdom is that convservatism is frequently demeaning toward women – it essentially suggests that only slutty, promiscuous women should have to worry about abortions – and that the consequence of sex CAN be pregnancy (duh!) therefore, if pregnancy happens, people should ‘accept’ responsibility – which conveniently falls on women – not men.
Further, that the broken home issues of women in the workforce could be solved simply by having the woman stay home (a comment which is unspoken sometimes but still pretty damned prevalent). Oh sure, there are platitudes about the man not working, but the pressure is pretty heavily on the woman – to be a ‘good mom’ and put her career on hold for the good of the family and her kids. This attitude is not limited to conservatives, but I certainly here it more often FROM them as part of promoting the ‘traditional’ family approach
Finally, conservatives frequently decry women’s allegations of bias and harrassing treatment. DG recently wrote about how KBR covered up dozens of rapes which occured in Iraq where the victims were KBR employees. The attitude was about money being important enough to require employees to waive rights to sue over negligent acts – such as oh, locking up a female victim in a shipping container for 24 hours after the attack – because we need to ‘protect companies against frivilous lawsuits.’ Money is king, and respectful treatment of women victimized by men who have been ‘under the stress of combat’ well, that comes in second to saving money.
Lastly Mitch, in your rather typical at this point way of condescending toward many people – you appear to want to gloss over the fact that VASTLY more women prefer being political independence OR the Democratic Party to the Republican party – apparently they are all stupid, deluded fools who can’t see the undercurrent of sexims which runs through the good ole (white) boy club which the GOP has been in the past, and has now reinvented itself as since 2004. I know you don’t like the claim that it is such – but women see the fact that Ann Coulter, Laura Cheney, Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin all seem to do well, and get accolade in the Republican party, despite being a. Venomous, lap-dog, twit, and bigger twit – on issues – the one common factor is that they are all ‘relatively’ attractive. There aren’t very many popular women in the Republican party who aren’t photo-genic – and who don’t appear to get half their ‘appeal’ from their looks. It smacks of sexism – and often, where there is smoke, there is fire.
Here’s a nice lineup of others they forgot to mention:

Not just modern conservative women, either. Remember Margaret Thatcher or Jeanne Kirkpatrick?
.
I’ll take any of them over the hollyweird women
don’t forget this classic either…

Great reminder, nate! Who could possibly forget Britain’s real Iron Maiden?
Most certainly Kirkpatrick and Schafly and Malkin and Coulter as well.
I’m proud to say I am a conservative though admitting it publicly has nearly gotten me stoned in the St. Cloud area…
and granite is really heavy.
We so need women to mobilize and elect a woman Governor.
Peevish’s skirt billows up over his head, he chides the author for making up a strawman, then proceeds to spend more time than sense to say, “because you conservatives hate women”.
“Lighten up, Francis.”
Peev has a point — who could forget the respect and admiration that the DFL gave to Carol Molnau?
From an email I just received from the MN Tea Party Partriots
Your Tea Party Patriots National Coordinator Team,
Debbie , Mike , Kellen , Ryan , Jenny , Mark , Sally , Diana , Billie, Tucker, and Dawn
Six are women
Five are men
Farmgirl,
Why do we need to elect a woman governor? Show us a good conservative candidate and we’ll back that candidate… the sex isn’t part of the equation.
MoN, never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Penigma is SO PROJECTING. Berg’s 7th law beotch. Misogny has been just as much of a part of the left, if not moreso, than the right.
“but women see the fact that Ann Coulter, Laura Cheney, Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin all seem to do well, and get accolade in the Republican party, despite being a. Venomous, lap-dog, twit, and bigger twit – on issues – the one common factor is that they are all ‘relatively’ attractive.”
Isn’t calling a woman a twit pretty sexist? I’d say peevee just had a Freudian slip there 🙂
Yes, Pev is kicking up the straw. How’s Pres Hillary doing? Your party elected her right? Didnt push her aside for a unprepared MAN did they? How about the hell your side rained down on her husband for using women as playthings? Man that was a mess back then, wasnt it? Poor Bill, catching hell from all those people on your side.
“(a comment which is unspoken sometimes but still pretty damned prevalent)”
Peevee is a delirious idiot.
“…the fact that VASTLY more women prefer being political independence OR the Democratic Party to the Republican party – apparently they are all stupid, deluded fools who can’t see the undercurrent of sexims which runs through the good ole (white) boy club which the GOP has been…” Peevee (Useful Idiot or Liberal Fascist?)

penigma paraphrased:
“Here are all my ca-razy preconceived notions about conservatives blah blah blabity blah …”
