Metaphor Alert

By Mitch Berg

Does whatever you believe created the universe – God, biology, remorseless fate – have a sense of humor?

The jeep carrying Fidel Castro’s remains broke down…

…and had to be pushed the rest of the way.

So you tell me.

I wonder how many soldiers with AK-47s are standing behind the crowd, that was no doubt forced to be there, making sure that they mourn properly.

at least it didn’t get a flat tire, that would have been too much!

  3. kel Says:

    is that a UAZ-469 or a GAZ-69?

    Good point, kel.

Had it been a real Jeep, it probably wouldn’t have broken down. 😀

BH I’ve got a neighbor who’s restored 2 Willys, one from ’43 and one from ’46 – they are indomitable. The one from ’43 has a snorkel so he actually drives across a (shallow) river with it – the electrical system is waterproof (to a point) so the lights work under water. He’s found a source for felt gaskets like the original equipment so it leaks oil. Some pretty amazing engineering went into those beasts considering the technology of the 40s

It strikes me that good mechanics can jerry rig just about anything to work for a few miles. This reminds me of the classic “IDGAS” failures I observed while working at a factory where the workers were spectacularly unmotivated–they joked that those leaving were going to get “a real job.” In an IDGAS failure, the parts check out, the instructions check out, everything else checks out, which leaves… “I Don’t Give A ****.” Spectacular IDGAS failure, and I hope the mechanics responsible don’t suffer for it.

    kel,

My dad was in the army during the Korean War and ran the motor pool at Ft. Bevior, MD. He told me once that Ford built Jeeps during the war, using Ford drive trains. In his experience, he said that those were tougher than Willys thought they were. I have a friend with a 45 model Willys and it is also rock solid.

Looks like kel is correct, that ain’t a Jeep but a Russian cold war leftover. How appropriate. Karma. It would have been even more appropriate if it caught on fire, though.

I wonder how many people in the crowds were holding back their laughter at the irony.

Look at that picture closely. The onlookers are all holding cell phones snapping pictures. I am going to hazard a guess that the onlookers were “selected”. I am also guessing that a few people were approached to have those pictures deleted, if you catch my drift, as it appears that a number of people were not selected well.

it occurs to me that this was their ONLY working UAZ-469 otherwise they would have simply swapped the incapacitated one for another one that was somewhere further back in the procession. The optics of swapping it out for the only other reliable vehicle, a 1958 Buick, were worse than simply pushing it

  12. Chuck Says:

The comment I heard was that even Satan doesn’t want that douche, so he tried to sabotage the vehicle.

yeah I threw him into the Lake of Fire, worthless POS

I posted the story on FB with a snark about how well socialism works except when it doesn’t. My liberal nephew responded by saying it showed how poorly US auto makers performed. Just about lost my coffee through my nose.
