Real Feminism, Real Change

Nothing tells a would-be rapist “reconsider your ways” like blowing his head off.

And in and around Chicago – where generations of gun control have led to the biggest criminal quagmire in America – women are increasingly saying “baloney“:

Local gun shop owners say they’re seeing an increase in the number of women shoppers right now. The reasons, they say, are many, including the downturn in the economy and violence on the street.

According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, about 48 percent of people taking their first handgun seminars this year happen to be women. CBS 2’s Pamela Jones reports on the growing trend.

“It’s very dangerous out there. I mean, there’s people getting robbed here and there,” said Josie Santiago. “It’s just for protection.”

That’s one of the reasons that I’m not worried about gun control making a big comeback, no matter what the President really believes on the subject; when women start shooting as enthusiastically as guys do, then gun control is doomed on at least a national level.

The city of Chicago itself?  Well, that might take some work.

  1. He should go back to community organizing, he seems to have left a lot on the table when he went to go run for the state senate. Can anyone name a single f***ing accomplishment he had as a CO? Or am I just a no good racist for asking this?

  2. I am delighted to see more women becoming proficient in the use of firearms. As always, there is the caveat that they must genuinely be prepared to use them, or risk having their own weapon used against them.

But I suspect there are an increasing number of women who ARE prepared to do just that when the situation merits. And then there is that lovely, catharsis of a happy hour or so, perfecting one’s aim shooting targets, keeping in practice. Great stress reliever.

  3. The first line reminds me of a time in social studies class where we studied a bit of Sharia law.

OK, kids, what’s the penalty for theft? (cutting your right hand off)

OK, kids, what’s the penalty for murder (cutting your head off)

OK, kids, what’s the penalty for adultery?

A gasp went through the room, followed by an audible sigh of relief when the teacher delivered the punch line that the punishment was “only” decapitation.

Which suggests an appropriate punishment for would be rapists here….

  4. But would you think this was so great if YOU were an innocent bystander that was accidentally killed by a stray bullet? Didn’t you say it was wrong for even one innocent live taken? How do you justify your waffling?

  5. Krod,

Every time you think you have a “gotcha” on me, step back. Re-read what I’ve written on the subject. Then abandon the notion of the “gotcha”. It just doesn’t happen.

I’ve said, often, that I specifically support self-defense. For starters, mistakes are vanishingly rare. And when they happen, the responsibility is easy to ascertain; prosecuting an individual for a wrongful self-defense shooting is simple. Prosecuting a government for executing the innocent? Impossible.

If you can’t see the difference between a legal individual action with direct, strict accountability for error, and a concerted government one with no accountability, than I have to ask you – how do you call yourself a conservative?

Please answer the question without referencing “fear” or saying I “know you’re right” in any way, since neither applies in any way in this case.

  6. Should it really be impossible to prosecute people for executing the innocent? It might be difficult, but I would have to assume that perjury laws would apply.

And yes, I’d upgrade the penalty to the one prescribed in Deuteronomy; the perjurer gets the punishment he thought to inflict. Might have a lot fewer Chicago cops and prosecutors, though.

Ben, good point, but I think that the Constitutional right of every would be rapist is to have his manhood shot off. Isn’t it the 30th Amendment or something like that?

(hey, if liberals can put privacy into the Constitution, I can put this in, right?)

  7. Bubba, excellent point on punishing the perjurer in regard to accountability.

    ….

“For starters, mistakes are vanishingly rare.”

Sure, berg, but yet that is a chance you will take in this instance but won’t when the odds of you being wrongly put to death are much much much more vanishingly rare.

    *fade to scene*
    BANG! BANG!
*two lie dead on the scene, the attacker AND an innocent bystander*

    .

By way, berg, I am a Classical Liberal / conservative / libertarian, thank you very much. 8)

  8. Sure, berg, but yet that is a chance you will take in this instance but won’t when the odds of you being wrongly put to death are much much much more vanishingly rare.

First of all, it’s Mitch. Mister Berg if you’re nasty. Don’t call me Berg, if that’s quite all right.

Second: Well, doy. Yes, that’s the chance we take. Conservative/libertarians accept that you take chances on people; you have to hold government to a higher standard.

  9. By the way, if the prospective victim shoots at the prospective rapist’s manhood, the chances are good (or at least better) that she’ll be shooting down, and the odds of an innocent bystander getting hit are greatly reduced. :^)

(always point the muzzle in a safe direction, like a rapist’s…)

  10. Yes, bubba, low odds but the odds are extremely low of being put to death for a crime you didn’t commit. There is a higher standard/lower risk for the death penalty. A lot more innocent people die due to a stray bullet.

Therefore, when conservative/libertarians support capital punishment and liberal gun carry laws, they realize the chances and that we should always strive to hold everyone, and especially government, to high standards.

BTW, the best way to defend yourself is NOT to aim for the crotch… or head… or leg… you should aim for the abdomen. Heck, I think carry classes consider a head shot to be a major no-no. (Joel? Others?)

    ….

mITCH, I’m sorry is I upset you; I’m not feeling as nasty today with all the precipitation, so I’ll take a rain check on callin ya mister berg. 😉

  11. As we cover in class, the reason that pretty much everybody argues for aiming for center of mass isn’t that it’s the best place to hit an attacker; it’s the best place to miss from. Miss center of mass by a foot, and the bullet stays within the attacker, reliably. Miss a headshot by a foot, and the bullet almost certainly doesn’t (unless you miss pretty much straight down).
