Peak Wrong

Then:

WORLD’S OIL WILL RUN OUT IN TEN YEARS

The latest measurements confirm that the world’s oil and natural gas supplies are running out too fast. At some time between 2010 and 2020 the world’s supply of oil and gas will fall below the level required to meet international demand.
The US government is aware that we are about to endure a disastrous international energy shortage. According to Dr James McKenzie, a senior member of the climate change programme at the World Resources Institute in Washington, USA: “That’s why we went to war in Iraq.”

Now:

“It is better to choke back than to sell into this market,” Henderson said.
“There is just too much gas,” said Kastner. “I expect to see a downturn for the next two years.”

And yet Paul Ehrlich isn’t earning a living scrubbing pans in an Olive Garden.

Thanks, all you “I F*****ng Love Science”-reading hamsters on the left!

  1. “We only have 30 years of proven reserves!”

We’ve had 30 years of proven reserves for my entire life: it’s what you know that you can produce at a price that’s in the realm of economically viable. Disruptive technologies can change that, as fracking has proven.

I love folks who are “science” driven and yet never bother to figure out what the science actually says rather than just listening to the scientists. Scientists are usually right when asked about the detailed processes involved in their specialty. But they’re just as wrong as the general population about the applications of their science to the real world.

  2. Great – if we’re running out of oil and gas then we don’t need to “fight global warming” – it will take care of itself by 2020! Then we can worry about how to keep from freezing our asses off.

  3. Orwell foresaw this.
Shortages and rationing are not the inevitable result of Leftist rule.
They are the goal of Leftist rule. If there is no shortage, by God they will do whatever they have to do to create one!
Back in the 70s and 80s, when the Leftists pulled out there ‘peak oil’ science, the response of economic libertarians was that it was no big deal. Human ingenuity would find a way around the problem. The analogy was to the supply of draft horses in the late 19th century; look at the growth curve and by 1920 every hectare of arable land in the world would be need to grow oats for horses!
Fracking and other tech found a way around peak oil.
The problem at the bottom of Leftism is that it limits humanity. Back when people had such arguments, Oakeshott and G.R.G. Mure said that the logical positivism (the idea that the nature of everything real is discoverable and definable by science) wasn’t a ‘better’ philosophy than what had gone before, it was the end of philosophy. the philosophy of logical positivism had demonstrated that all philosophy was just words, and words ultimately have no meaning. Only things have meaning.
