So Mitch – What’s With The New Look?

By Mitch Berg

Long story short – something in my old code was messing with the page load.

In order to fix things, I’ve substituted this new (and, let’s face it, not especially inspiring) design template while I try to diagnose the problem.

I’ll be tinkering with things all weekend and, likely, into next week.

Upside:Β  No ads for now!

Downside:Β  No ad revenue for now πŸ™

The adventure continues.

I was wondering about that last night. I just figured it was my computer acting up again…..

I trust that, as a usability expert, your site will become a bit more spiffy soon?

Good luck getting it sorted out and getting the cash flowing again.

  4. Mr. D Says:

Just glad you’re back, one way or another.

The old design is tired. Time to replace it!
Perhaps you can steal the design of a friend of mine: http://nitwit.com/
    1995 was a good year.

Call me parochial, but I always liked it. Granted, I’ve been using it for 6.5 years, but I have always enjoyed it.

Well, usabilty and “spiff” aren’t the same thing – indeed, sometimes they’re at odds with each other. And being a usability guy doesn’t make me an expert at HTML or CSS.

    But I’ll do the best I can…

This was an opportunity lost. You should have put up a blank page with the message ‘This site deemed unacceptable by the Office of Fair Speech. Please call 202-456-1414 for more information.’

Then when the site comes back up, you could say ‘Happy Halloween, were you scared?’

    Dave,

Heh. I was never much of a marketing guy πŸ™‚

  9. Cindy W Says:

    OMG Dave that was great!

Better this than not being able to access SitD at all. Fingers crossed the problems will be resolved quickly.

you actually make money on this thing? Don’t quit your day job Mitch πŸ˜‰

Maybe you could go with an island theme. Have little boats sailing back and forth… Oh wait. Never mind.

Hah! How friggin’ gay would that be?

  14. Kermit Says:

Pretty friggin’ gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that….

Remember: great engineering is simple engineering. Maybe your old design was too complicated for your own good.

  16. Mitch Berg Says:

It wasn’t the design that was the problem. It was a call to some remote server – an ad server or some such – that broke everything.

I liked the old design, from a usability and readability perspetive. I’m going to use this opportunity to upgrade the site’s overall look and feel – but I did like the old design quite a lot.

Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater, but maybe it’s time for some newer photos on the banner? Just a thought. People change in 5 or 6 or 7 years.

  18. Mitch Berg Says:

People change in 5 or 6 or 7 years.

Yeah, although I don’t really want to post current pix of my kids, either.

Still, I’ve been running through ideas all weekend here. As opposed to “executing a redesign” or anything actually useful…

  19. Ben Says:

outsource it Mitch! πŸ™‚ I know a poor college kid *cough cough* who has some HTML background who will do it for you on the cheap and maybe some free pub for his blog πŸ˜‰

  20. Dog Gone Says:

So, Mitch, leave the old pix of Bun and Zam, and just add newer pix of yourself, maybe the rest of your team, or even the MOB parties if anyone took any photos. Include a shot or two of the radio show, for example.

  21. justplainangry Says:

This template is excruciatingly annoying! Please, please hurry up and get back to parochial!

  22. Mitch Berg Says:

Yes, it is; it is one of two stock templates that came with my original installation, and the other one got blown away by, well, my old design.

I anticipate a new design in place within the week. Pray for a rainy weekend, though.
