  1. I hate Bush, I’m not voting for him. But that is not a fair characterization of what he said (watch the whole clip and decide for yourself).

Stephen Colbert: Well, the right to have an individual firearm to protect yourself is a national document, in the Constitution [Bush at this point says “And thank God for that”], so shouldn’t that also be applied national…

The question if you listened to it to the end, in context, was shouldn’t gun control laws be administered at the national level. Bush says no. I agree.

  2. Colbert’s question was inane. He cites the 2nd amendment (Congress shall pass no law) as as an argument that Congress should pass a law.

Bush should have looked hiim in the eye and asked him “Are you stupid boy?”

  3. But you just know that, in the unlikely event that JEB is elected, he will immediately become THE MOST CONSERVATIVE PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY!! RONALD REAGAN WASN”T AS CONSERVATIVE AS JEB!!

  4. Here’s one situation where Trump’s tactics work better.

Colbert is not conservative, he’s not trying to help Bush’s chances. Nobody in the national media is. They ask questions hoping for nuanced and reasonable answers that can be picked apart to scare the opposition and dishearten the headline readers in the GOP base, those who will not say “Now wait a minute, Jeb’s not like that, there must be something fishy here.”

Trump doesn’t bother trying to sound nuanced and reasonable – he provides his own scare quotes. Bush doesn’t have the personality for that. None of the GOP candidates do. So they either fake it, suffer these tactics, or avoid media exposure, all bad choices. That’s why Trump is ahead now.

  5. I believe Jeb is the kind of moderate (*coff RINO) that cod be persuaded that it’s time for some common sense restrictions on the 2nd amendment.

I think he believes it’s time for a common sense immigration overhaul that gets the Third World in here with less fuss.

I think there’s a while bunch of common sense legislation he and Barry could agree on over a few beers.

  6. Jeb’s not pure enough. Thanks, DMA, got it.

One of Jeb’s first campaign hires was Vin Weber. I’ve met Vin and he’s a smart guy with a long background in Republican politics, but he’s not a fire-breathing Conservative, not since he left the old Sixth Congressional District and became a Washington lobbyist. He’s one of the people who believe the way for Republicans to win elections is to say just enough conservative stuff to secure your base but not so much you scare off the mushy middle, because the mushy middle are the votes you need to get to 50% + 1. Tone, nuance, pacing, thoughtfulness, calmness, openness – these are the attributes that Moderates want so that’s what Jeb has to deliver to get their votes.

Is Jeb actually a Moderate himself? Or is he only saying Moderate things to appeal to Moderates to get elected, and then he can govern like a Conservative? Given his patrician family background, I’d lean toward Moderate Himself out of a sense of Noblesse Oblige. But that’s still better than Hillary, the grasping, covetous nouveau riche.

  7. Joe, haven’t we been going with “better than” for too long already? We got majorities in congress, please remind me how that’s going.
