MOB Party: Myths Exposed!

The Minnesota Organization of Bloggers (or MOB) has been a going concern for five years now.  And we’ll be having our fifth anniversary gala this Saturday at Keegans, just west of Hennepin on University in northeast Minneapolis, from 6:30 ’til whenever we’re done (usually around 11 or so).

Over the years, a bunch of myths have sprung up around the MOB and our semiannual parties.  I’m here to shine the exhilarating light of truth on them, that they wither and die and let us concentrate on the fun stuff.

Myth 1: The MOB is a conservative group: Nope.  We are rigorously non-political.  Oh, we’ve had some folks from the leftymedia claim otherwise, but they are, to put it as civilly as they deserve, morons.  Indeed, it’s almost (but not quite) bad form to talk politics at our meetings.  Whomever you are, we wanna see you there.

Myth 2: The MOB is affiliated with the “Mob” – the derogation that many “town hall” and “tea party” protesters have assumed: Nope.  We were the MOB five years ago.  And while many members of the MOB are members of the Mob, there is no actual connection.

Myth 3: MOB parties, being full of conservatives, are dull dull dull: Again, nope.  For starters, see Myth 1; we’re not a “conservative” group.  Now, over the years we’ve had a few leftysphere wags – Tim McKay, Two-Putt Tommy – sniff and claim that MOB parties just have to be dull, since there’s conservatives there.  So compare and contrast for yourself; a party where (to pick a random selection of past attendees) James Lileks, Bob Davis, Sarah Janecek, Joe “Learned Foot” Tucci, Sisyphus and Katie McCollow are holding forth, versus (to pick a typical “Drinking Liberally”) being stuck in a room with Ken Wiener, “Minnesota Observer” and “Tild”?    I’d say that myth is busted.

Myth 4: You can’t smoke cigars at Keegans anymoreThe patio may or may not be closed on 9/12 – but there’s always the sidewalk.   I’m totally there.

Myth 5: There’s a $10 cover: Wrong-o.  There’s no cover charge.  Just buy a beer or a shot from among Keegans’ best-in-town assortment of brew, wine, and hard stuff.  And the food is better than a jab in the face with a sharp stick, too!

Myth 6: Parking in Northeast Minneapolis sucks: Well, it’s no myth – Minneapolis is doing its best to make sure everyone who comes to town has to pay a ticket.  But the ramp behind Keegans is actually halfways reasonable – better than the meters (which are enforced, rigidly, until ten).

Myth 7: We have to wear nametags: Never, never, never.

So join us Saturday night!  We’ve had a ton of RSVPs – perhaps the biggest pre-party response we’ve ever gotten – so by all means, come on down!  University, just west of Hennepin, starting at 6:30 or so.

  1. Myth 1: The MOB is a conservative group: Nope.

Mitch, while you’ve in the past said that there were liberal members, you’ve also said the members were predominantly ‘center-right’.

  2. Right. THe predominantly are. Partly because most of the best bloggers in town *are* center-right, and partly because too many lefties think they’ll get cooties if they’re seen in a room with “the enemy”.

But bring your crew by. It’s always a lot of fun!

  3. Mitch is right. You should come, Pen. Flash got through the whole evening last time with only two or three pokes from a cattle prod. You’ll do at least as well.

  4. SWMBO and I plan to be there; I hope to meet Peev in the corpus. (Note: that’s “meet Peev in the corpus,” Peev, not “turn Peeve into a corpse.”)

  5. I really, really wish that nametags were comme il faut at the MOB party, btw. It’s so easy to confuse Lileks and Mitch, frex.

  6. Sure Joel. If you can get past that 3″ height difference Berg and Lileks are damn near twins!
Too bad about the name tag thing. I would have worn one that said angryclown just for yuks.

  7. The President and the opening at TCF Stadium just a hop, skip and a jump away. Traffic shouldn’t be a problem.

    Take the 4 bus.

  8. People, revolt! Do not listen to the man when he tells you no name tags! You wear that name tag if you want. I myself plan to wear a sandwich board. And nothing else.

  9. I’m still undecided. I might be beat considering I’m going down there starting at 3pm for all the pre-game hoopla. Mr.D where do I get the 4 bus? right outside the stadium?

  10. Where are you coming from, Ben? The 4 rolls up Hennepin from downtown and from the north it snakes through Nordeast on Johnson Street, then goes west on 8th Street SE, crosses back over Hennepin and then turns on 1st Avenue NE and then hooks back up with Hennepin at the bridge. Either way it puts you within a block or two of Keegan’s.

  11. I think the best bus to get from the stadium to Keegans would be the 6; it runs up University all the way to Hennepin, so should drop you off either kitty-corner or across the street from Keegans.

    Here’s the schedule.

  12. That’s what I like to see! A big bunch of conservatives talking about their intentions to use public transportation to get around that liberal cesspool of Minneapolis. Have fun, guys.

Why not? Driving drunk is illegal. And we paid for the buses (vastly out or proportion to both our numbers and use of the system) anyway – why not?

  14. “Myth 7: We have to wear nametags: Never, never, never.”

You just identify one another by the three 6es on your scalps.

  15. rew, I shall be using my U-Pass that is $95 for the entire freaking semester. The irony is that taxpayers are subsidizing ME even more than the average rider, so in a way im actually sticking it to the guvmint. Don’t get me wrong I would MUCH PERFER to be driving my own gas guzzler to and from the game but I don’t have the $ for parking because I don’t have a trust fund or anything close to that.

  16. rew, it would be great if you came out. Tiger Lilly is going to be there and I recall that you were one of the first to welcome her with a comment when she debuted on the old MAWB Squad site four years ago. She’s still at it (and hogging my blog).
