Had It Coming

Is Pam Geller too provocative?

Geller – a long-time critic, it’s fair to say, of radical Islam and a fair chunk of the rest of Islam as well – has long been a lightning rod for the Political Correctness police, which isn’t in and of itself a bad thing.  I do think she goes to excessive pains to antagonize Islam.

So, naturally, does the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which may have existed for a good reason at one point, but today serves mostly as the supreme procurator of the PC Police.

Of course, Geller doesn’t go to nearly the pains that Chris “VIrgin Mary rendered in Elephant Dung” Ofili or Andres “Piss Christ” Serrano or Peter “Let’s Allow Abortions Through Age 1” Singer went to antagonize Christians, naturally.

And Ofili and Serrano’s days in the artistic sun came and went before the Internet suffused all of American culture, it’s not a stretch to believe that some keyboard commando, somewhere, threatened them.  And I’m sure Singer – still a professor, naturally – gets some utterly rhetorical abuse.

But last I checked, they’re all alive.  And no gangs of Christian thugs burst into their respective “art” exhibits or “classes” and handed down the mayhem.

But Garland was one of many bloody attacks in the past decade on people who regard Mohammed with the same irreverence most Westerners approach God.

And they were the second planned shooting that used the SPLC’s list of “hate groups” as a hit list.

  1. She does remind me a bit of anti-Christian bigots.
To add to your above…SPLC exists primarily to raise funds to pay handsome salaries to its leadership, who do very little other than sending out emails when the cash gets low and they need to raise more money.

  2. The SPLC is an anti-American hate group. Anyone that associates with them is a spite filled bigot.

  3. SPLC was NPR’s goto source yesterday when reporting why the Garland shooting happened.

  4. SPLC supposedly has an email list of wealthy East Coast liberals that they pound for money, over and over again, giving them dire warnings of white male fascist groups in the hinterlands just one step from attempting a coup. It works for them.
few years ago the SLPC put out a position paper on gay marriage. It was clear that the highly educated lawyer who wrote it did not understand that ‘hereditary’ and “congenital” are not synonyms.

  5. Lileks made an excellent point this morning:

“The most pathetic excuse I keep reading attacks the event for being provocative. Not just because it turns the objects of its muted sympathy into bulls who cannot resist the fluttering flag, but because it pretends that the entire point of the last 100 years in art hasn’t been provocation.”

  6. Worrying about being “provocative” to Muslims is another low expectation of soft bigotry that Liberals practice but don’t admit to.

Their “reasoning” is that Piss Christ was not sufficiently provocative to justify Catholic violence because society expects Catholics to conform their behavior to the dictates of civilized society.

But cartoons of the Prophet are sufficiently provocative to justify Muslim violence because society does not expect Muslims to control their behavior, to act as civilized as Catholics. That would be unreasonable.

Liberals treat Muslims as toddlers: if you provoke them, they bite; they can’t help themselves, they’re not fully adult, not capable of self-control.

  7. Gellar’s event was like one of those bug-zappers you plug in on your patio to lure mosquitos. Sure, they attract bugs and there’s lots of pop and sizzle, but it really doesn’t do much to reduce the numbers in your yard, and may, in fact, attract mosquitos from farther away to swing by.

Some folks, though, sure love the sound of the sizzle.

  8. I, for one, applaud Geller’s work. She is doing work dhimmi media and progressive PC police (ptr) are refusing to do.

We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. – Elie Wiesel

  9. Foreign news outlets quote the SPLC to site the large number of “hate groups” in the US. Either they don’t know the nature of that organization, or don’t care.
Crazy thing…..I looked at their map of the US with each “hate group” listed and mapped. There isn’t one anti-Christian hate group listed. Apparently they didn’t visit Madison Wisconsin.

  10. In my opinion, if you are more shocked/scandalized/up in arms that Pam Geller would hold such an inflammatory event, than you are that radical Jihadists reacted by attempting to commit murder and were killed in their attempt, then you should relocate to somewhere else that is more akin to your mindset. Like London.

  11. It strikes me that if the SPLC was taking a look at hate organizations targeting Christians, they’d have the unpleasant task of targeting the USDOJ and several state attorneys general these days…..it would be great theater, though.

  12. “they’d have the unpleasant task of targeting the USDOJ and several state attorneys generalAnd their own organization these days…..

  13. SPLC is just as idiotic and hypocritical as the Madison, WI based anti-Christian hate organization, Freedom From Religion Foundation and the rest of the atheists. They never sue companies or schools for allowing the multitude of prayer breaks that muslims get during the day. I guess they figure that Christians won’t track them down and kill them.
