  1. Swede Hollow is also a nice little place to visit – if you can get to it! It’s in a ravine near downtown (there’s a small parking lot at 7th and Payne). You follow the path around and under a huge brick arch and suddenly everything is quiet and still. It’s a lovely walk, but also fascinating to think about the Swedish immigrants (and others) that squatted here in makeshift shacks, working at the nearby brewery until they put enough together to move elsewhere, leaving their shack behind for more immigrants. It’s estimated that as many as 1,000 people lived in there at a time, but it’s all park now, and a very pleasant and peaceful place now.
