Let’s Try Some Free Association

If you were to learn about the United States entirely from media – news, movies, music, radio, television entertainment, newspapers – what are some of the erroneous things you would believe about this country and our society?

Leave them in the comments. No idea is too dumb – in fact, the farther out they are, the more I may like them.

  1. “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that; “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
    Isaac Asimov

  2. Asimov had some good qualities. He was, by all accounts, a very personable fellow, well-tempered, a great conversationalist who enjoyed the company of his fellow man.
But he was also an elitist and his politics were socialist.
If Asimov had said that to me, and I responded “Sounds like you think you are better than everyone else and you’re mad that they don’t know it” he would have had a good laugh.

  3. Just spit ballin’ here, Emery, but one of the many paradoxes with modern liberalism is that it both condemns the great mass of the people as idiots, and then laments that the country isn’t democratic enough. You know, “Corporate money is drowning out the voice of the people!”
The problem liberals have is that if the masses are not intelligent enough to choose their own leaders, the elite who chooses to lead them are self-selected. Their rule isn’t any more justified than any old gang of pirates or mobsters that decides to run things the way they want them to be run.
Progressives used to worry about this. Lenin justified his terror by citing Marx’s dialectic of history. History was the boss, not the people, and the Communist party was doing what history bid it to do. Progressives don’t much bother with justification these days. When they do discuss their vision of the future, people who aren’t progressives recoil in horror.

  4. You should have seen the scheiß storm I started on one of Insty’s posts when I dissed a Heinlein quote! Come to think of it, the quote was similar in theme to Emery’s Asimov quote.

  6. Yeah, if we didn’t like science fiction, we’d be picking on global warming theory!

    Oh, wait….
