Anders Gyllenhall: Quality Is Job 1!

A US Navy officer has M filed a sexual harassment complaint against a Miami Herald reporter.   Former Strib editor Gyllenhall is the Herald’s Executive Editor.

FishbowlDC obtained a copy of the July 22, 2009 letter addressed to Miami Herald Senior VP and Executive Editor Anders Gyllenhaal. In the complaint, Gordon calls for a “thorough investigation” to put an end to [Herald reporter Carol] Rosenberg’s “appalling behavior” that includes comments about the Commander’s sexual orientation.

The complaint outlines examples of Rosenberg’s alleged “abusive and degrading, comments of an explicitly sexual nature.”

And Ms. Gordon would allegedly make a bunch of longshoremen blanche:

Gordon writes:

To me, in front of another journalist with reference to why 9/11 co-defendant Mustafa Al Hawsawi was seated on a pillow in court:“Have you ever had a red hot poker shoved up your a**? Have you ever had a broomstick shoved up your a**? Have you ever had anything in your a**? How would you know how it feels if it never happened to you? Admit it, you liked it? No wonder why you like to stay in South Beach on your Miami visits.”

She could write for a Twin Cities’ leftyblog!

Rosenberg, to CNN’s Jamie McIntyre in front of roughly 15 journalists in the Guantanamo Commission’s press center:

To Jamie – “Aren’t you in the BOQ (Bachelor Officers Quarters)? I didn’t think you were in tent city because these people (military public affairs escorts) are so far up your ass that I figured you must be in the BOQ.”

Good thing we have gatekeepers.

Gordon, who also serves as the Pentagon Spokesman for Western Hemisphere and Guantanamo issues also accuses Rosenberg of “bullying” reporters from various outlets including New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Fox News, CBC, Der Siegel [sic] and Al Jazeera. He claims that over the years, Rosenberg has labeled her peers in the press and Gordon’s colleagues “bitches,” “stupid,” “lazy,” “incompetent,” “Nazis,” and “Saddam Hussein-like.”

Here’s my real question: How much do you wanna bet that “journalistic ethics” commentators will find some way to justify the whole thing under “journalistic ethics”, which seem more and more to be a framework by which journalists can justify anything they do?

  1. Mitch stated his real question: “Here’s my real question: How much do you wanna bet that “journalistic ethics” commentators will find some way to justify the whole thing under “journalistic ethics”, which seem more and more to be a framework by which journalists can justify anything they do?”

Yeah! That’s just the kind of thing those librals would do!

How about you let us know if it actually does happen, instead of all the what-if-ery?

  2. Fairness is everyone gets treated the same.

If a male reporter behaved that way to a female military officer, there would be no end to the calls for his firing.

As such, if the standard is dismissal for that kind of behavior, she should get the axe.

  3. Yeah, what angryclown said! Because nobody has ever twisted “journalistic ethics” to justify what they’ve done before, never ever ever!

Does angryclown even read this blog?

  4. Well, Trojan Man, Clownie has confessed that he pretty much skims the post before depositing his “special contributions”.

  5. I was afraid the high standards of the journalism business would decline after Anders left Minneapolis. Good to see his steady hand at the helm of another newspaper . . . headed straight for the shoals.

  6. Frankly, I kinda figure that military folks can stand up to much more vigorous questioning than a few, err, colorful ones from my middle sister, Carol. Then again, I’ve been wrong before — she got run out of Saudi by asking tough questions of some delicate flowers wearing USMC insignia.

  7. And the more I look at this, the more puzzled that I am. My sister characterises MSM reporters and the flacks that talk to them in a derogatory way, and you’re not leaping to her defense?

Well, while I’m not going to support her flouting the law — Godwin’s — I know that you’re not exactly a big fan of MSM reporters, either. I think you think — and have demonstrated — that they are, all too often, too eager to fawn over and fall for the okeydoke that they’re fed. I certainly do.

So, what’s the beef? That she’s been as candid and direct in her criticism as, say, Swiftee?

  8. And one more thing, in response to your comment about “Ms. Gordon” (sic) — well, yeah, sexist that I apparently am, I think USN Commander Jeffrey Gordon does, in his complaint, sound a lot like a whiny little girl. I particularly like Ms. Gordon’s taking such offense at Carol’s perhaps over-the-top expression of displeasure in seeing him walk out of the shower and out into public areas.

Suck it up, Commander. (So to speak.) Yeah, my little sister was more than a little rude to you, but your inability to bear up with good grace under the strain of such harsh words is far more a problem for the “good order and discipline” of the men and women under your command than anything else.
