MN RINOs for McCain

By Mitch Berg

David Strom runs down the list of Minnesota political luminaries – and former luminaries (mostly the latter) and notes:

 Hmm.

The McCain campaign has announced its “Minnesota Team,” and overall the list is very heavy on the liberal Republicans.

Very Heavy.

Very very heavy on the liberal Republicans.

And, after noting the list’s leftness of center and longness of tooth, asks…:

Why was Pawlenty so unsuccessful in filling out this list with big names? Where are the big money people other than Eibensteiner?

Hmmm. Where is everyone else going? Romney or Guiliani? Or just waiting in the wings?

 MOB Mayor Andy Aplikowski says:

I can tell you that many people I have talked to about McCain, are supporting him solely based on his military career, and time served in the Hanoi Hilton. I would never begin to attack them or McCain for that, but I would strongly urge anyone seriously considering McCain to look at his Senate career instead. That’s the kind of President we will get with McCain.

Some other names on the list that I know can simply be summed up by saying that they believe the Government should solve every and any problem. RINOs, if you will. We’re gonna be ground zero in the 2008 Presidential melee for Republicans, and this is the list of people McCain and Pawlenty put together to go twist arms? Frankly, a lot of these people won’t even be listened to by the conservative base of the Republican party.

Gotta confess – I’d love to be able to support McCain.  He’s a war hero, for crying out loud.

But McCain/Feingold would only be forgiveable if McCain were to ask for forgiveness – and, better yet, seek atonement by sponsoring an immediate repeal.

Without that?  I just can’t see it.

    Amen, Mitch.

I keep telling all the “Screw Coleman” and “to Hell with TPaw” conservatives that it’s time to move into the heart of the party at the BPOU level and kick ass. Quit the whining and start acting.

I think it’s a little early to be reading the tea leaves on why any presidential candidate hasn’t locked up more votes than they have. Keep in mind we’re about 20 months away from the 2008 presidential election which means there is plenty of time for people to pick their favorite (as the weaker candidates drop out and new people enter the race) or hold out on making any endorsements.

As far as McCain and the BCFRA, it’s old news. I didn’t ask Bush in 2004 to grovel and promise to repeal it at the first opportunity and he’s as much to blame for anyone (particularly as he originally promised to veto) for it. IMO if we were willing to give Bush a pass on in 2004, it’s hypocritical to say four years later it should be a deciding factor. Particularly as McCain has one of the best records on fighting pork-barrel spending in Congress (he was one of only three Senators to vote against the farm bill, energy bill, and transportation bill and also voted against Medicare Part D) and he’s been more hawkish than Bush on winning the War including the Iraqi theater.

Full Disclosure: I’m about 55-45 between Romney and McCain and find them to really be the only two acceptable nominees of the eight or so that have declared.
This is as always subject to change as new facts are learned. No doubt people more experienced in politics are holding out until they learn more before publicly endorsing someone.

Forget about McCain for a moment. Isn’t it time that we indicted the DFL for rejecting vital reforms of itself?

Mitch, I tried emailing you about this post but your email inbox is full.

McGinn? McGinn? I guess McCain has decided to write off the gun community. Yucko.

Kermit –>BPOU? Sorry that acronym is not popping to my front of brain.

McCain is good on many issues, but his gang of 14, McCain-Feingold, desire to be loved by MSM for his maverickness, and general thought that the people are the cause of corruption in polictics, not the politicos make him very unattractive to me.

  7. The Lady Logician Says:

Loren – BPOU is Basic Political Operating Unit. Your precinct and county/senate district unit! Kermit is absolutely correct. I heard a lot of people whining about the RINO’s but when push came to shove (going to caucus and Senate Distric/Congressional District conventions) these folks were all AWOL. Things will never change until they get involved and start MAKING the change!

But it’s easier to stay home and whine about it.

Definitely, Kerm. I suggest you take your party as far right as possible. Who needs to win elections anyway? You can always just grab power after you burn down the Reichstag.

  9. Loren Says:

Of course we can follow the clown, move to the left and then wonder why people should pick R over D. And we have to have the R = Nazi reference too.

Ignore that perhaps some of the reason people didn’t vote R was that there was no difference with the D.

    Thread over BTW. Godwin’s law.

Is it Angryclown? Nelson Rockefeller? Gerald Ford?

Only Mrs. Clown knows for sure!

BPOU = Basic Political Organization Unit
