From The Gut
By Mitch Berg
Lefties – many of them, anyway – chalk all dissent from the right up to “hate” or some other form of character flaw.
Naturally, that rarely-to-the-point-of-almost-never the case. There’s – what’s the word? Nuance.
Mr. Dilettante writes about that gut feeling some of us get from Stuart:
The problem that most conservatives have with Franken is that when he entered into the political arena, he was an especially vicious guy. I’d even be willing to forgive him that, though: as they say in Chicago, politics ain’t beanbag. My problem with Franken is that he has a history with someone I know personally. That someone is Evan Montvel-Cohen. The story of Franken’s involvement with Montvel-Cohen, and the scam Montvel-Cohen pulled on the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club to get funding that was instrumental to the founding of Air America ,was much downplayed during the election cycle, but it was to my mind the most damning thing about Franken. Montvel-Cohen and I both attended the same college. I know him. He was a shifty character then and most everyone on our campus recognized it. Franken did not, apparently. More importantly, Franken didn’t do much of anything to make the situation right after he became aware of it. To me, the incident speaks to Franken’s character and judgment. And it speaks quite badly.

It was only $800,000, taken from poor, inner city children. What’s the big deal?

Coleman was much more of a centrist than Franken will be. I wonder who Mr. Centrisity voted for?
July 14th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Hey, hey, hey….let’s not go overboard here. Didn’t you get the all-points Soros bulletin?
It was a loan, paid back with interest…right Flush?

Terry, good one; Thanks for the laugh!

Thanks for the nod, Mitch.

One of the many signs that Mr. Centrisity is insane is that he used to pop up here and condemn Limbaugh for his ‘hatefullness’. Then he turned around and voted for Franken — a lefty who used to go on the radio and say ‘hateful’ things about conservatives all the time; the only difference between them (other than political outlook) was that Limbaugh has been on the air much longer than Franken was & Limbaugh managed to make money. Franken had to swindle children out of their money to pay his salary.

Oy, oy, oy!

Another thread where you wingnuts try to convince yourselves that you’re not actually just mean and selfish.
Good luck with the encounter group fellas!
July 15th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Wait a minute here. I fully admit to being mean and selfish, but even I draw the line at siphoning money from a children’s club to fund a sure-to-fail radio venture.
Apparently, AC is okay with that though, which makes him even more mean and selfish than me. AC, you’re a mean and selfish prick.

I seem to be characterized here pretty often as a ‘lefty’; do you accuse me of failing to appreciate nuance Mitch? I know many liberals, lefties, whatever slang derogatory term you wish to use, who share an appreciation for distinguishing between those who speak hatefully, as distinct from those conservatives, or more right oriented, who reason clearly, document facts accurately, and do not speak hatefully.
I am not familiar with the details of what you say Montvel Cohen did, but if guilty, it is deplorable. That is very different than promoting guilt by association. Absent more clear indications that Franken both knew and approved, I want no part of trying to smear anyone, Conservative or Liberal using that tactic.
You’ve been blogging for years; I’ve been blogging as of last Thursday for a whole month. Although in that month, readership and comments have increased, there are more links to other blogs, and I have been recruited to write for a second blog, one that seems to have a readership about as large as this blog. The very first thing I wrote I dedicated to you here at SitD for the inspiration, and to KRod. With everything I write, original piece or just comment, I try to live up to a compliment you paid me here a long time ago, that I am a pretty smart cookie. That compliment and your example were my inspiration for writing.
Just this morning, and not for the first time, I wrote about the importance, and the value of dissent, and welcomed it. I miss having the time to comment on SitD as much as I used to. But this tarring with a too broad brush, this doing the very thing you criticize, I don’t miss that so much.
Badda, apologies if the last time I commented, on the Anne Coulter piece, I mistook your meaning. Sorry I didn’t have a chance to get back to you and reply in a timely manner.

Doggie, Cohen and his buddies diverted $850,000 from the Gloria Wise Boys & Girls Club of New York to Air America’s parent company. The money paid Al Franken’s salary. No one knows if Angry Al ever paid one dime back, but I’m guessing not.
The fact that we don’t know is just simple proof of the bias in the media.
And Angryclown is a dipshit.

You have been doing a great job DG, because, although you are a lefty, you still are a pretty smart cookie; whereas AssClown is simply a dipshit.
July 15th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Look into the story DG and then blog on it. Now you know something about it, you should have heard about prior to the election, but the MSM failed you and millions of others on the Air America scandal.
Angry Al has a long record of less than tasteful comments and actions.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
On the bright side, Al is hard at work in Washington asking Sotomayor about Perry Mason episodes. And Amy Klobuchar wants to know if Sotomayor watched the All-Star Game. We can all be very proud.
July 15th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Yeah, cause the wingnut senators all asked some really tough questions of Roberts and Alito, right Mr. D? Please. You got nothing.
July 16th, 2009 at 5:41 am
AC,
It’s kabuki theater. She’ll be on the court. No one disputes that. The only way the public is going to pay attention is if someone comes in with evidence that Sotomayor was responsible for breaking up Jon & Kate’s marriage or something.
And as a New Yorker, it works out good for you — you’ve got 3 senators now!

Mitch,
I’m sure you’re right, hate isn’t a motivator for the right. I mean, I’m sure smirky comments about Sen Barack Obama’s work as a community organizer or the others where they show watermelons on the White House lawn, or show all of the Presidents and Obama is just a set of eyes, or where the Free Press owner calls for someone to kill Obama, I’m SURE that’s just a rare few people. I’m also sure that the comments that Muslims support terrorism, or the Willie Horton commercial, again, I’M quite sure all of that is uniquely limited to just a couple people, and I’m sure that Strom Thurmond and a host of other southern conservative whites joining the Republican party since 1980, and the southern whites voting decidedly with Republicans, again, I’m sure that’s just a handful of a few tens of millions of people – in fact given that mostly McCain carried ONLY the south solidly – along with portions of the west – I’m sure it’s NOT about racism at all, I’m quite sure.
Your feelings are about as nuanced as calling anyone who disagreed with Bush traitors, or backing Ann Coulter, or Rush Limbaugh (when he assailed Michael J Fox).
July 16th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Competing for the race baiting badge with angryclown, penigma?
All your political foes are conveniently racists? How “nuanced”.
July 16th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Yeah, cause the moonbat senators all asked some really tough questions of Roberts and Alito, right angryclown? Please. You got nothing.
July 16th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Peev, do we need to remind you of the depictions of Condi Rice or Michael Steele?
Or how about Sen Boxer?

Funny how Peev goes on and on about nuance, yet either he didn’t get the nuance of Rush’s statement about Michael J. Fox, or he intentionally distorts the statement.
Funny.
July 16th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Mitch,
I’m sure you’re right, hate isn’t a motivator for the left. I mean, I’m sure smirky comments about Gov George W Bush’s work as a CEO or the others where they show redneck trash on the White House lawn, or show Bush compared to a chimp’s face, or where a columnist from the UK Guardian calls for John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, or John Hinckley Jr to assasinate George W Bush. I’m SURE that’s just a rare few people.
The leftist’s hatemongering puts the right’s to shame.
(It was fun at first, but soon lost it’s novelty)
