Pre-Emptive

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

Chuck Hagel was fired as Defense Secretary. The story is he was an outsider, couldn’t get past the inner circle of Obama advisers. And who are those people?

Valerie Jarrett, of course. And Denis McDonough. He’s from Stillwater, went to St. John’s University, and now runs the country.

The White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to speak before the president’s announcement, said McDonough has played a key role in all of Obama’s major national security decisions in recent years, including the end of the war in Iraq, winding down the war in Afghanistan, responses to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan and repeal of the military’s ban on openly gay service members.

Minnesotans should not wait until he’s purged, we should start distancing ourselves from him now. Preemptive repudiation.

That would not be Minnesota nice, naturally…

  1. Hagel is a bit of a mystery to me. Perhaps he was a round peg in a square hole and needed to be ushered to the door. For a politician he seemed to lack certain deftness in handling the personalities in his own department, Congress and the White House.

But frankly, Bob Gates tenure seemed no more fruitful either in fixing the Pentagon’s ongoing train wreck of procurement or success in the policy options he delivered to the President specifically regarding the Middle East and re-sizing the military. To be sure that’s not all on Gates back but it isn’t all on Hagel’s either.

Everyone seems to be cheering Gates for a job well done as some kind of role model Defense Secretary. I am scratching my head to figure out what was so well done by Gates regarding the key issues facing the DOD, they are all still with us seemingly untouched?

Gates certainly took bows as some sort of no nonsense ‘Lone Ranger figure’ rescuing the DOD from the primitives but I still can’t shake the feeling he did little more than keep his seat warm?

As far as Panetta’s reign goes at DOD he wasn’t around long enough to really put his stamp on it. On the other hand he and his fellow laborers at Langley once again seem to have been doing a George Costanza and dozing under their desks while ISIS invented themselves.
