Question

What precisely is the ethical difference between the statement that got the loathsome Don Imus fired (calling the Rutgers women’s hoop squad “Nappy Headed Hos”)…

…and Letterman’s (that Bristol and/or Willow Palin are promiscuous little tramps)?

Other than the mainstream media and liberals in general not believing that conservatives deserve anything they get, I mean?

  1. Cause “nappy headed hos” was based on nothing but the players’ color. Letterman’s jokes, while in poor taste, were based on Bristol’s actual behavior.

    Glad to help.

Angryclown assumes this post will be followed by many in the nature of “Boohoo! Librals are so mean!” Such posts will cause Angryclown much mirth.

  2. Letterman’s jokes, while in poor taste, were based on Bristol’s actual behavior.

Bristol wasn’t at the game, though, nor to my knowledge does she favor having public sex with members of the Yankees. So I’m not sure the jokes were based on any actual behavior she has undertaken. Although I suppose she’s a hopeless slut because she did get pregnant as a teenager. That sort of thing never happens in more enlightened precincts like Perth Amboy, of course.

I know it’s hard for Dave, at his advanced age, to differentiate the Palin daughters. But the beauty part is that ol’ Dave fathered his own child out of wedlock, so he’s not exactly in the best, shall we say, position to comment on the sexual foibles of others.

I don’t think ol’ Dave’s liberalism makes him mean. I think it makes him incoherent.

  3. Y’see, Mr. D(umb), for some reason the Republican Party decided to make a public figure out of Bristol by putting her and her baby daddy onstage at the convention and lending her out to Good Morning America and The View to prattle on about abstinence education. If the Palins had acted like decent parents and treated their daughter’s pregancy as a family matter, rather than a series of photo ops for Sarah Palin, she wouldn’t be a subject of late-night comedy. The jokes were in poor taste, not all that funny. But it’s a little too late for you wingnuts to be whining cause everybody isn’t treating Bristol like the Virgin Mary, m’kay?

    “the Republican Party decided”

I don’t think it was a plank in the Republican Party platform. Were members of the Republican Party formally consulted on this matter? When did they vote on this? It sound to me like you are taking one of the many PR blunders of the failed McCain/Palin campaign and trying to make it a “Republican” failing. It must be your “role” to constant spout B.S.

  5. But it’s a little too late for you wingnuts to be whining cause everybody isn’t treating Bristol like the Virgin Mary, m’kay?

The problem with the joke was that Bristol wasn’t there. And Dave and his writing staff were too lazy to figure out which daughter was at the game. And that little matter takes the jokes out of the realm of tasteless (a joke about a sexually active 18 year old) and into the realm of creepy (a joke about a 14 year old girl). And incoherent, as I pointed out before.

I don’t expect Dave to be fair or apologetic about any of this. He won’t be. And nothing will happen to him. That’s the way it is.

  6. the Republican Party decided to make a public figure out of Bristol by putting her and her baby daddy

As opposed to trying to softpedal the story and having the media bellowing “PROLIFE CHRISTIAN VEEP CANDIDATE IS A HYPOCRITE FOR HIDING SLUTTY PREGNANT DAUGHTER: Photos and analysis below the fold!”.

  7. How come no jokes about Barry’s child molesting brother? Yes, Samson Obama is banned from entering the UK due to his pedophilia. Now, that should create many late night TV jokes.

Or how about this….both Barry’s father and grandfather were polygamists. The jokes should just write themselves.

Hey clownboy. Do you think that if Governor Palin’s father and grandfather were polygamists, there would be at total news and joke blackout on the subject?

  8. “How come no jokes about Barry’s child molesting brother? Yes, Samson Obama is banned from entering the UK due to his pedophilia. Now, that should create many late night TV jokes.

Or how about this….both Barry’s father and grandfather were polygamists. The jokes should just write themselves.”

It’s a conspiracy, Chuckwagon. Also, President Obama met his father one time. Had nothing to do with his brother. But I’m sure you can make up some super funny jokes about it. Is “Half-Hour News Hour” still hiring?

  9. Letterman’s bizarre antics are nothing new. Remember when Drew Barrymore jumped on his desk and flashed him? He and his producers didn’t scrub it off the tape when it was broadcast. He clearly has some issues about sex with young girls and that is the source of the “joke” about Palin’s daughter getting knocked up at Yankee Stadium. If Letterman sees Todd Palin walking in his direction, he’d better run and hide.

  10. This isn’t a surprise at all.

Letterman hasn’t been funny for more than fifteen years.

Crispan Glover on the old Late Night w/David Letterman… that was kind of funny.

  11. I don’t often find myself agreeing with Palin, but I agree to a point on her response. While I think she took the maximum advantage of the situation to promote herself, she was dead on target that Letterman crossed a line. He was not funny, and he was extremely offensive to many people, especially to many women. I think Palin’s objection resonated with many women, regardless of their political point of view. This was not, IMHO, a political issue; right /left, conservative / liberal doesn’t apply to this.

Bristol Palin chose to put herself in the public eye, to become a public figure which makes her to some degree fair game for public attention. I think it is reasonable that being a target for public attention is not the same thing as there are no limits, no lines, which cannot be crossed.

Apparently Leno made similar jokes, but didn’t draw the same attention for some reason – certainly not fair or equal treatment for the same offense. Imus offended as a two-fer – an unacceptably derogatory comment about both race and sexual conduct.

I doubt that Letterman could tell one Palin daughter from the other, and therefore didn’t know which daughter was at the baseball game in question. He says he had forgotten about the middle daughter, Willow, and I find that plausible.

Accepting his explanation that he was referring to the older daughter who is of legal age doesn’t make his comment very much more acceptable. He elaborated, but nowhere in his comments did I hear Letterman apologize to anyone. Admitting his joke was a cheap shot and in poor taste does not amount to an apology. I think an actual apology would have been better.

If Palin’s objection causes even a brief improvement in the quality of comedy, good job – but unfortunately, I doubt that will be the result. Especially given the number of women in comedy who pander to that same lowest common denominator. They are as much at fault as Letterman, Leno, or Imus, and should be called on it equally.

  12. Say a few words words to praise a man on his 100th B-Day = Run out of office…

    Nappy-headed-hos = Fired!!!

Rape of a 14 year old girl = Praise from AssClown and the liberal Democrats!!!

  13. Mr. D on June 15th
“I don’t expect Dave to be fair or apologetic about any of this. He won’t be. And nothing will happen to him.”

    David Letterman on June 10th
“Letterman joked he meant teen mother Bristol, 18, and admitted his quips were in “questionable taste.” ”
    http://www.usmagazine.com/news/david-letterman-apologizes-to-sarah-palin-sort-of-2009116

    Mr. D again:
“Dave and his writing staff were too lazy to figure out which daughter was at the game.”

So 4 days earlier Letterman admits exactly the mistake you cite, but you were too lazy to look it up. In your defense, maintaining a sense of victimhood can be a full time occupation. So many facts to avoid and ignore.

  14. I’m not sure the Dave-Does-Know-the-Difference defense makes much sense, considering he has a staff and writers and producer folks.

If it was important to them, they would have refered to the right daughter by name. As it is, they very likely thought it would be funnier to blur the lines… perhaps they thought the public woudn’t know or care if Dave was talking about the right daughter. In fact, they probably knew well enough that they were refering to a completely different daughter… and if one daughter would get knocked up, the younger one probably would too.

That’s the joke Dave wanted to tell. To him, some gal he violently disagrees with (enough for him to say she is slutty looking, with little reason) has a daughter who got pregnant outside of marriage… and, har, har, har – her sister is probably a slut, too.

Again, that’s the joke Dave, and the Late Show staff, wanted to tell.

  15. Badda says:
“That’s the joke Dave wanted to tell.

I think you are absolutely correct Badda. Not so clear is that this was political in intent, rather than just topical. I suspect that it was also calculated to get attention for Letterman as part of a controversy. Why didn’t Leno get similar notice for similar jokes?

  16. I saw the clip, Rick. It was a non-apology apology, of the sort favored by nearly everyone these days. And I stand by what I said about nothing happening to him. He won’t be fired or even disciplined. He might lose a sponsor or two in the short term, but that’s about it.

  17. Leno is not nearly as snarky and bitter and grumpy and desperate as Dave is, Dog.

On some level, you expect jokes… but not quite the kind Dave, and his staff, seem so eager to use.

Jay has the reputation for telling jokes, regardless of his political position. Dave has the reputation for insulting people with whom he dislikes and disagrees.

  18. I might also add, Rick, that you are the last person to be weighing in about someone making obscene references about someone else’s loved ones in a public forum. I’m sure that several other people remember the incident in question, including Mitch.

  19. Badda bayed: “Jay has the reputation for telling jokes, regardless of his political position.”

He also has a reputation for comedy that’s as edgy and sharp as overcooked pasta. It wasn’t always that way – I saw him back when he was funny. But then you far-right types – with Mitch the notable exception – are almost completely lacking in comedy fu.

  20. Dog Gone pondered “Why didn’t Leno get similar notice for similar jokes? ”
Leno has class, and is not a bitter, angry creep. Unlike Letterman.

  21. Mr. D:
    “I saw the clip,”
So you just lied. Why let facts get in the way of a good dose of feeling sorry for yourself.

  22. Wingnuts sure get teary-eyed when you bust ’em, eh RickDFL? Have a good cry, Mr. D.

  23. He can insult me all he wants, Clown. He insulted my wife on this forum. She had nothing to do with anything we’d been discussing. He never apologized for it. So he can f*ck himself. And in the event, so can you.

  24. I strongly disagree with DickyDFL & AssClown; the rape of a 14 year old girl is not funny.

  25. AC:
“Wingnuts sure get teary-eyed when you bust ‘em”
I think country music is to blame, It promotes a victim mentality.
    Mr. D:
You will have to refresh my memory, but I vaguely recall you had it coming.
K-Rod: And I am sure Angryclown and I disagree with you that servicing the entire D block for an extra cupcake is a fun and productive way to spend the weekend.

  26. Seemed like AC enjoyed it back when I was a guard on weekends. I would expect a professional like AssClown to get more than just an extra cupcake. Nowadays I don’t guard on weekends but I will tell the newbie “boss” to allow you two more than one cupcake for your “service” and to play country music while you are “working”.

  27. K-Rod proves you can not insult the truly stupid. At least we can still laugh at them.

  28. RickDFL said:

“You will have to refresh my memory, but I vaguely recall you had it coming.”

Yeah, I imagine your over inflated self image requires that you forget how much of a scumbag you are at times.

  29. RickDFL said:

“K-Rod proves you can not insult the truly stupid”

If so, he’s only following your lead. *shrug*

  30. Hey Rick DFL. Get K-Rod trying to be Swiftee!

Keep practicing, K-Rod. Swiftee’s thuggish and stupid, sure. But he’s a lot better at being thuggish and stupid than you are. Love the constant use of “sphincter-polishing” and boldface claims that librals are fascists or whatever. But you really have to be a little more of something – offensive, funny, insulting – something, if you want anybody to read your little posts.

You are on probation. If you do not improve the quality of your posts, you will be forced to suffer a 90-day shunning.

  31. Have a good cry…

No cry would be as good as the one that came from your slum in Passaic when your Mets choked for a second straight year last season.

  32. Thanks DickyDFL for admitting you can not truly be insulted.

I treat insults like a duck’s back treats water… better yet, like a revolving door treats morons… right back at ya.

*fade to scene… AssClown trying to get into a building through a revolving door only to continually end up outside…*

  33. Letterman is apologizing tonight. The article with full transcript is below:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2009/06/15/letterman-to-apologize-to-palin-tonight/

Guess losing sponsors added to his contrition. A week late, but a start.

If he had apologized before, Rick, this wouldn’t have been necessary, now would it? And that is the last thing I’ll ever say to you, you canister of baked wind.

And as for you, Clown, there’s this:

    Q. Why does Clown wear underwear in the shower?
    A. Because he hates to look down on the unemployed.

  34. K-Rod said: “*fade to scene… AssClown trying to get into a building through a revolving door only to continually end up outside…*”

That’s a kinda poetic image there, K-Rod. Maybe your identity could be the asshole wingnut who posts *poetic* insults. Angryclown is liking the idea.

You’ve ducked a shunning with an uncharacteristically intriguing post, K-Rod. Angryclown doesn’t think that’s ever happened before.

  35. Has A-Rod said anything on this? I mean, if you guys who are clinging to “He was talking about Willow” bit are right, I’d think A-Rod would be upset at being called a child rapist.

As for Bristol, when you sell your baby pictures to magazines, you don’t get to complain about people telling jokes about you anymore. Although asking for better quality jokes is OK.

  36. “As for Bristol, when you sell your baby pictures to magazines, you don’t get to complain about people telling jokes about you anymore”

Wow I had no idea. 300K for the photos. Maybe Dave should just cut them a check.

  37. AC, you had me at “think”.

I saw Obama’s kids on the cover of People magazine. According to stooj, that must make it open season… bring on the rape jokes, eh stooj.

*…could someone help that poor clown in the revolving door…*
