Protection

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

. Connecticut mother leaves 11 year old child in car, gets arrested by police.
California mother leaves 12 year old child in car while she visits bank, gets shot by police.
Is it just me, or is “child protection” getting out of hand?

Like all those Vietnamese villages that had to be destroyed to protect them…

  1. Second link is not working for me. Google comes up with the California mother being taken hostage by bank robbers and possibly shot by them or the police. Is that the correct story?

  2. Yes, Loren. A mother left her kid in the car to go into the bank. Bank robbers abducted mom and others, using them as human shields in the getaway car. Police chased them for an hour, shooting at them and eventually 20 police officers fired on the car containing the human shields including that mother.

The cops are now awaiting an autopsy to determine whether the kidnappers killed their own shield or whether one of the 20 cops shot her. My money is on the cops shooting another innocent – see Empire State Building, for example.

Of course, in the eyes of Child Protection, she wasn’t really innocent. She left a child in a car. Just like the woman in the other state who got a ticket.

Yes, I know, it’s not the same. The cops didn’t shoot her for leaving the kid, they shot her for . . . well, I’m not sure why, really. The bad guys were shooting and might have hit an innocent bystander so the cops shot the hostage to end the standoff — to protect innocent bystanders? Is that like destroying a village to save it?
    .

  3. Well, no one expects the cops to demonstrate the marksmanship that they expect of permit holders.
