Change We Can Believe In

By Mitch Berg

Obama reaches out to ‘Moderate’ Pirates:

For too long, America has been too dismissive of the proud culture and invaluable contributions of the Pirate Community. Whether it is their pioneering work with prosthetics, husbandry of tropical birds or fanciful fashion sense, America owes a deep debt to Pirates.

The past eight years have shown a failure to appreciate the historic role of these noble seafarers. Instead of celebrating their entreprenuerial spirit and seeking to partner with them to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.

Oh, of course it’s satire.

As far as you know, anyway.

While there has been a lot of attention paid to the piracy of commercial vessels around Asia and Africa, there has been comparatively little media note of the continuing piracy in the Caribbean. Mostly drug traffic related, it is an ongoing problem for primarily recreational boating instead of commercial shipping, but it does result in numerous fatalities to American civilians. Efforts to eradicate the piracy has been primarily from the Coast Guard, which deserves a lot more attention and funding.

It would be nice if the current attention spills over to fighting piracy along our own borders as well.

You make an excellent point, Dog Bone. While it’s true there hasn’t been much media attention to the topic, I did see a small, independent documentary that I would recommend to anyone interested in Caribbean piracy.

What’s Obama got against the pirates? Aren’t they just trying to spread the wealth around?
