“Don’t Ever Do Business Against The Family Government”

Joe Doakes from Como Park emails:

Operation Choke Point?  Never heard of it.  But it sounds believable, for this bunch.

You think that because we’re in America, you can do business with any other legal business you like?  No, the government will TELL you who you can do business with, and on what terms, or you’ll never do business again.

Sound like something you’d hear from a Chicago gangster?  Hmmm, I wonder why?

It’s the Washington way.

  1. It’s an “OP/ED” piece Doakes.
The contributor Mr. Basile is a former “Senior Press Advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq” and former “Director of the Office of Communications for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington”. Mr. Basile is just another shill for the financial services industry.

Justice Department Inquiry Takes Aim at Banks’ Business With Payday Lenders
“Federal prosecutors are trying to thwart the easy access that predatory lenders and dubious online merchants have to Americans’ bank accounts by going after banks that fail to meet their obligations as gatekeepers to the United States financial system.”
“In the new initiative, called “Operation Choke Point,” the agency is scrutinizing banks both big and small over whether they, in exchange for handsome fees, enable businesses to illegally siphon billions of dollars from consumers’ checking accounts, according to state and federal officials briefed on the investigation.” http://www.cnbc.com/id/101365366

  2. too bad the GOP establishment is looking for someone the NYT will give their “Good Republican” stamp of approval. 8 more years of “enhanced bureaucracy weaponization” under HRC will give us a government that requires party loyalty oaths when you renew your drivers license.

  3. Emery said: “Mr. Basile is just another shill for the financial services industry.”
Emery still carrying water for the left. Just remember Emery not everyone gets to be commissar, they’re not going to give you that dacha you’re dreaming of.

“In Germany they came first for the Communists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
    Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.”

  4. Wrong thread Kel. That’s a false equivalency.
The men and women of the United States Armed Forces are one of the biggest demographics (customers) of “Payday Lenders”.

  5. Wrong thread Emery;
from the article: “According to the Administration, those industries interestingly include ammunition sales, gun sales, home-based charities, gambling, pharmaceutical sales, short-term loans, raffles, Amway and Mary Kay-style sales businesses, and credit repair services.
The Administration is refusing to answer any Congressional inquiries about Operation Choke Point.”

The men and women of the United States Armed Forces are one of the biggest demographics (customers) of:
    ammunition purchases,
    pharmaceuticals,
    raffles,
    gun purchases,
    Mary Kay,
    Amway, etc.

Emery are you saying that members of the armed forces comprise a criminal subculture that the US government should be eradicating?

  6. Everyone in the country could read this article, but a large percentage of them will still say “well, I am fine with this as long as I still get my free birth control pills”.
It used to be the left would call any Republican a “fascist”. and we would laugh. But the gov’t has gotten so powerful and controls so much, that I wonder if we are getting there.

  7. OK, Emery, you provided a link that basically demonstrates that, just as Joe Doakes commented, the Obama administration is using its power to bully companies involved in legal commerce.

And that doesn’t bother you exactly….why?

  8. Yes, Emery, the elected elite must wield the brute force of governement to save people from themselves.

I mean, we certainly can’t have any personal responsibility going on now can we.

And the incongruity of the left would be laughable if many of them didn’t make (often economy killing) policy. “We have turned the corner, the economy is in recovery.” Yet somehow we still have to protect the lower class from voluntarily taking payday loans. We have to raise the minimum wage. We have to reduce the gap in income inequality (under breath: “…that has grown under our watch…because the economy is not in recovery, millions are still unemployed, and the economic agenda we have planned will further stifle any significant economic growth.”)

  9. This is on par with government agencies at various levels determining that landlords who rent to people who later get caught drug dealing at the rented property lose their property because the landlord ‘should have known’ or at least ‘should have known better’ than to rent to people who turned out to be drug dealers.
I suppose, it didn’t sound like a bad idea – choke off the cash out point the third party clearinghouse provides for the unscrupulous payday lender or fraud perpetrating bidnessman. Then again, we have a constitution and the government isn’t supposed to take property without convincing a judge or jury that the enterprise is guilty. But given this administrations love of secrecy and using the alphabet soup of regulators to ‘regulate’ (hat tip Warren G) their political enemies, it figures that they can’t help themselves. Rather than wasting precious time going after some miscreant, you go after the somewhat related person or institution you long thought needed its comeuppance regardless of whether or not the government can prove mens rea in ‘not’ knowing the business of its customers.
But hey, this gang forked over $59Million after seeing a fake website (allegedly).

Does Mr. Wallace look like a bitch to you? Easier to go after the people who can’t/won’t fight back or would be bankrupted if they did.

  10. What kind of gibberish is that Kel?
It’s an op-ed piece written by a spokesperson on behalf of the financial services community. Wall street and financial services bank–rolled Obama’s first (2008)campaign, pleading to be bailed out. Then Wall street and financial services bank–rolls Mr. Romney’s (2012) campaign pleading to get rid of the onerous regulations in Dodd–Frank. This is no different.

  11. Or getting your facts straight would suffice. But then again why bother, this post is Joe Doakes’ work product.
