You Gotta Go Through Hell Before You Get To Heaven
By Mitch Berg
It’s -10 at noon.
Next week, though? Flirting with freezing.
An old piece of NoDak weather lore; “tough fall, easy spring”.
I may have made that up from whole cloth. And maybe not.
We’ll see, won’t we?

We’ve been through worse. Some individual days will probably be quite tough… and some days might even become record-low days.
I love to bitch about the cold, but for eff sake… This isn’t much of a surprise. We’re Minnesotans and Midwesterners.
I prefer to appreciate all of our seasons… but usually, I don’t much look forward to spring. Sure it’s warmer, but it’s just a complete mess.
As long as the wind isn’t strong, winter in Minnesota is pretty good.
Like Mitch has said before, this is nothing compared to the bitter wind of the Dakotas.

I don’t mind a little cold, even the bitter stuff once in awhile. It is when the Almighty lines em up several days in a row I could do without!

As long as my car starts? I’m good.

I remember when I spent a couple of years in AK in the late seventies, we’d usually have a nearly two week spell where the high temps wouldn’t go above 40 below. They’re just getting out of a spell like that now. The village of Tok (south of where I lived) had a low of 78 below. In Minnesota, I’ve come close to those temps up on my place on the North Shore.

Spring messy here? Not really. We called it “mud season” in Vermont. Deep frozen ground sitting close on granite made the freeze/thaw cycle especially bad on the roads, and the runoff was a real mess. And considering 75% of the roads were unpaved you understood why 4WD or AWD was pretty much required.
Still, the temperatures were more moderate than here unless you were up on a mountain, but you had to give up the brilliant sunshine we get in winter.
