Shining the “King Banian Signal” On The Cloud

You just knew this was coming, didn’t you?

With the state and federal governments looking for ways to jump-start the economy, a New Jersey businessman has an ambitious public works project he says will create more than 5,500 jobs and provide $500 million or more to local contractors. The businessman is Zygi Wilf, principal owner of the Minnesota Vikings.

The project: A $954 million, state-of-the-art stadium for his football team in downtown Minneapolis — to be constructed using more than $635 million in public money.

“Why not? The Vikings are a public asset,” said Lester Bagley, the Vikings’ vice president in charge of stadium development. “This is going to create an economic boost

Of course, stadiums create no more of an economic boost than, say, light rail.

Kiiiiiiing?

  1. This is going to create an economic boost
They said the same thing about another publically funded sports arena. What was that one called? Mmmm. I think it started with an H.H.H.
That sucker was a money priniting press.

  3. Hey, it worked for the Texas Rangers.

And the economic boost wasn’t limited to Dallas. Crawford real estate benefited directly.

Corporate subsidies are a great way the government can cause economic benefits to trickle down to everyone.

Just so long as they limit player salaries to what non-union Japanese players make.

  4. I’m sure that there must be some point to Slash’s comment. Damned if I can figure it out, though.

  5. He’s still auditioning for that Colbert Report gig.

Slash is like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.

  6. Near as I can figure, Slash was trying to zing Bush in a very roundabout, non-sequiter sort of way. I’m sure he thinks he was being very witty and profound.

  7. Slash is like Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard.

Except that most of his attempts at humor end up like William Holden did in the same movie.

George W. Bush will be gone in 18 days, Slash. Courage!

  8. Oh, I get it. Slash thinks that it’s hypocritical for Mitch to complain about public financing for a new stadium because Bush got some public entity to pay for a new stadium in TX.
Because Mitch thinks Bush is a principled conservative.
    Hahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahaha!
    Hoo!
Damn that slash is a funny guy.

  9. The sad thing is that there are people who may actually buy into this argument.

Or at least pretend to because they’re afraid (or afraid that their constituents believe) that the Vikings will leave if they don’t get a taxpayer funded stadium.

  10. Well I, for one, am not going to sit here and let you argue that President Bush’s and the Republican Party’s protection of taxpayer-funded corporate subsidies is anything but the truest example of free market principles in action.

Next thing you’ll be trying to charge oil companies market lease rates on public lands, and then who’s gonna drill, baby?

What’s good for Exxon-Mobil, is good for America.

If they do charge oil companies market lease rates on public lands, I wonder where the money will go. And I wonder if the charge will show up in oil product prices. And I wonder who that will affect the most.

What I wonder most of all is if Slash thinks any of this is “on topic”. :-/

  12. > What I wonder most of all is if Slash thinks any of this is “on topic”.

I just hope the oil companies keep prices low enough that Mitch can afford to drive whereever it is the Vikings relocate to if they don’t get their taxpayer subsidy.

And I’m thankful that they’re keeping prices articially below what the market would bear out of heartfelt appreciation for their own subsidies.

Corporations, will they never stop giving back?

  13. Hee hee hee. Slash thinks Mitch would pay to see a Vikings game. Talk about out of touch…

  14. It’s almost as though slash knows nothing about how oil is produced & sold and how various levels of government in the US regulate the drilling, refining, and distribution of gasoline & other petroleum products.
Kind of like a Saturday Night Live skit with single moron playing all the parts.
