What’s In A Name

By Mitch Berg

I don’t lose a lot of sleep about how other people choose to express their political beliefs.

Wanna demonstrate?  Chain yourself to a fence?  Make a big papier-mache doll head?  Knock yourself out.

But one thing Obama supporters consistently do, I gotta confess, rubs me way the wrong way.

Constantly calling the Senator “Barack”.

No, I know it’s his first name.  And if one were talking to him, calling him “Barack”, while a little informal for my conservative rural tastes, might be one thing.

But I get emails, constantly, from Obama’s campaign, like this one: “Take Election Day off for Barack”

I don’t recall a single piece of literature, ever, saying “Come out and work for Ronald” or “Let’s get behind John and Sarah”.   Not even being partisan here – the whole concept just gives me the creeps.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it smacks of personality cultism, just a little?

They sure as hell aren’t using his middle name much, are they.

  2. Margaret Says:

It’s a Black thing, you wouldn’t understand it. Seriously. It was covered in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. Remember “Martin” and “Malcolm?”

A certain neighbor of yours has a habit of calling Sen Klobuchar “Senator Amy”. Every time I see that, my soul vomits a little.

When I see The One, music comes to mind:

Listening to YOU, I get the music
Gazing at YOU, I get the heat
Following YOU, I climb the mountains
I get excitement at YOUR feet

Right behind YOU, I see the millions
On YOU, I see the glory…..

What is happening in His head? Oooh, I wish I knew. I wish I knew.

  5. Chuck Says:

When I want to annoy a lefty, I call him “Barry”. Not sure why, but it sure annoys them.

Foot: You need some diversity training. How dare you say “Senator Amy” when you refer to Senator Barbie”.

  6. Mr. D Says:

The proper term of endearment for Sen. Klobuchar is “Senator Hotdish.”

    “Is it just me,”

    As usual!

“A certain neighbor of yours has a habit of calling Sen Klobuchar “Senator Amy”.”

    Thanks for noticing!

I thought it was Sen. “Jugs of Fun” *rim shot*

I’m back for a one week engagement, be sure to tip your bartenders and waitresses!

Neighbor, I need my ladder back to do the gutters. *grin*

No. Hotdish. As in the ubiquitous Minnesota meal that cooks in one container. Usually contains some amalgam of tater tots, cream of mushroom soup, etc. In other parts of the world, sometimes referred to as a casserole. A reference not to her anatomy, but her folksy manner. A variation on calling former New York senator Alphonse D’Amato “Senator Pothole.”

You lefties – always with your mind in the gutter.

As opposed to MITT!! or Sarah (sigh, flutter flutter)..or when you’re too lazy to use the whole name, just.. “W” – yeap, the Dems sure do live in a tent all by themselves.. yessirrreeebob.. Talk about cultishness.

And if we want to focus on names, let’s talk about the use OF his middle name a moment. Why is it that you righties bring up his middle name? Is being an Arab wrong, or perhaps being a muslim is? Even J (someone I respect) started the thread off with bringing it up, suggesting the Dems are hiding from it. Hiding from WHAT, Roosh, what would they, and why would they hide from the name Hussien, why SHOULD they?

Mitch can’t even be bothered enough to adapt to the conventional spelling, in his silly little protest point. Of course, it isn’t wrong, but you righties have enough supporters who think it is, that you’re plenty happy to play on it. The tragic part is, J may be right, because there are doubtless supporters on teh left who’d pay attention to his middle name too, that’s not an indictment of either the left or the right, folks, that’s an indictment of us, but only one party decided to use it.

The point is, this is just political hack cover for the fact that your side is using his middle name in a purile way. MANY campaigns have touted the first (only) or last (only) name as some sort of cheer – get over it.

Yeah, in contrast, Republicans are very, um, respectful of John McCain. Nobody calls him by a nickname. Few attend his rallies. There’s very little of that tawdry *enthusiasm* that Obama inspires.

Heehee! Go with that one, wingnuts. An election isn’t a popularity contest after all.

    Oh wait, it kinda is.

    Peev,

    Not your dumbest comment ever.

Not your most nonsensical comment ever.

But perhaps the one that’s most rubbed me the wrong way in a long time.

Not even sure why; you don’t even try to make a point, your venality is pretty penny-ante by your standards, and it’s fairly innocuous.

Maybe it’s because while I’m a famously patient guy, I’ve gotten a lot less so in the past year.

I’ll get back to you on the answer.

Either way – dumb comment. Just dumb.

  12. swiftee Says:

At least they don’t change the name ten times a month…right peevee, penema, (crap, now I’ve forgotten the other 8)?

  13. swiftee Says:

Heh, your comment host laughed at peevee!

That 8 was supposed to be “eight”.

  14. swiftee Says:

huh…didn’t do it that time. lets try it again if I type 8) do I get a smiley?

    (Science is FUN!)

  15. Night Writer Says:

    Bruuuuce!

  16. Bike Bubba Says:

Ya know, if it’s wrong to call Senator Daley Rezko Ayers Wright Pfleger Obama by his first name, what about Republicans’ use of the current President’s middle initial?

  17. DiscordianStooj Says:

I don’t like it either. I’m big on formality, even if I do despise politicians.

I felt the same way when Sarah Palin called him Barack throughout the VP debate.

As for middle names, I don’t hear republicans calling their candidate J. Sidney McCain. When did we using middle names for people who aren’t serial killers or John Adams’ kid?
