Profile In Courage

By Mitch Berg

The financial markets melt down.

The country teeters.

Barack Obama…

…votes “present” and spends the day preaching to the choir.

Really, what is to be afraid of if he wins?

Obama’s a little too smart to take the crappy economy and unpopular bailout off your hands five weeks before the election, wingnuts. It’ll be his problem soon enough – January 20, 2009.

  2. BradC Says:

mangy clown!!! Glad to see you’ve emerged from exile after your Mets choked like dogs for the second year in a row.

  3. Chuck Says:

How about those Mets…kind of the John Kerry of MLB. Hey AC, you should take Amtrak down to Philly and see the Brewers play. You CC a real team.

On the above subject….the Democratic leadership is supporting this bill, but any Republican who votes for it, will have Democrats run commercials attacking said Republcan for voting for it.
Remember Bush 41 agreeing to compromise with Dems on the tax increase, then they used it against him.

  4. Terry Says:

Clown, Obama is a US senator. His party is in the majority. This is his problem.
All that experience registering Chicago voters has no doubt prepared him for the task of managing the countries banking system. At least as well as Schumer and Dodd, anyhow.

  5. Bike Bubba Says:

AC, if Obama ain’t willing to take a stand now, what on earth tells you he’d be man enough to do so if he’s (God forbid!) elected?

Come on. A man takes a stand, even when it’s not popular. Obama is demonstrating that he’s not in need of a NuttyBuddy here.

  6. Terry Says:

How will Obam get the $700 billion he needs to fix the banking system if congress won’t cooperate?
    He’ll apply for a grant!

  7. Just Me Says:

“On the above subject….the Democratic leadership is supporting this bill, but any Republican who votes for it, will have Democrats run commercials attacking said Republcan for voting for it.”

    And vice versa.

When one looks at the vote on the bailout plan, both Tim Walz and Collin Peterson (both Democrats in conservative districts in Minnesota) voted against the bailout. So did Travis Childers of Mississippi and Don Cazayoux of Louisiana, both of which won special elections in 2008 in conservative districts. They were touted by Democrats and the media as darlings of the “rejection of Republicans”. Now it seems like they are part of a rejection of Democrats by their own.

  8. angryclown Says:

You should have listened to Colin Powell before you kooks ran him out of the government. It’s the Pottery Barn Rule: you break it, you bought it. It applies equally to the economy as to Iraq and New Orleans. Your guy looks a little clueless on the economy, by the way – wonder if he can even calculate the tip on the Early Bird Special at the Denny’s in Scottsdale.

Like a dog, Angryclown can smell fear on you wingnuts. It smells like…victory.

Speaking of victory, who are the Twinkies matched up against in the playoffs? Having a hard time figuring that one out.

  9. angryclown Says:

By the way, Angryclown’s last game at Shea was Saturday’s masterful start by Johan Santana. If he were still in the Mini-Apple, I wonder if he would have given you guys that one game you needed to overtake Chicago. Oh well, you got all winter to think about that one, eh?

  10. Mitch Berg Says:

Four months ’til pitchers and catchers report!

  11. angryclown Says:

For Larry Craig and Mark Foley, every day is pitchers and catchers!

  12. Badda Says:

    Zing!

  13. Bike Bubba Says:

AC, yes, you break it , you buy it, but I’m thinking that the root problem for a lot of poor lending risks defaulting might be those who allowed those poor credit risks to borrow a lot of money. You know, the guys who wrote and expanded the CRA.

Oh, that might explain a “present” vote.

  14. penigma Says:

Let’s see, you need to blame someone, so you look to blame Obama.

You blame CRA, you blame Henry Paulsen, you blame Barney Frank.

No culpability for yourselves, for your party.

I have one coworker who used to be President of Merill Lynch Bank, another who was an examiner, then lead examiner, for the OCC.

Their reaction to your nonsense about CRA – was to laugh derisively. One is a committed capital markets guy, life-long Republican. His comment, 40% of loans were subprime – they don’t qualify as CRA. Her reaction, CRA is maybe 3-5% of loan portfolios – and again sub-prime doesn’t qualify for CRA.

You have been so consistently wrong, failing to both know the facts, history, or accept that the actions of guys like Phil Grams deregulating banking law to allow for massive interstate banks – that any comment you make becomes a charicature – a blithering fool phumpering for anyone and anywhere to point the finger at or to.

Yet… yes, please point a finger at Obama, who, among other things, was able to ‘deliver’ twice as many of his caucus as McCain, DIDN’T say he was for the bailout and then look like a deer in headlights in the meeting, backtracking to the House Republican position – thereby signalling acceptability to vote ‘no’ even while he was saying ‘yes’, suggested raising the FDIC cap to $250k ahead of McCain, and has been blunt about the risks but necessity while standing by the proposal. He doesn’t like it – but thinks it should pass… but YOU, of all people, want to bitch about political posturing. OMG. McCain has been the vaccuum of non-leadership, Obama MUCH stronger – but if he gives himself the least bit of cover, the vapid non-leadership of McCain is to be overlooked while focusing on Obama.

Yeah – journalism thy name is not Berg.

  15. angryclown Says:

Not sure where you’re getting the “present” vote crap, Bike Butthead. Obama and Biden are heading back to Washington to vote on the bailout tonight.

  16. Mr. D Says:

I have one coworker who used to be President of Merill Lynch Bank, another who was an examiner, then lead examiner, for the OCC.

And you have conversations with Norm Coleman. Peev, you are Baron von Münchhausen.

  17. Kermit Says:

Their reaction to your nonsense about CRA – was to laugh derisively.
I have that exact same reaction every time Peev posts a comment.

  18. Bike Bubba Says:

Five comments, and you haven’t even bothered to read the initial post? Good job, AC.

And Penigma, maybe you’d better do some fact checking on yourself. The CRA regulates primarily lenders, not loans, for starters, and are we to seriously argue that when government sets lending standards artificially low for banks, that other lenders interested in making loans will not follow?

    Really?

And the GOP responsible? Well, inasmuch as they let the Clinton era regulations pass Congress and be sustained through a dozen years of control of Congress, yes, the GOP is somewhat responsible.

Not nearly as responsible, however, as the Democrats.

  19. angryclown Says:

Yeah, Bike Butthead. Mitch either didn’t mean you to take that literally or he’s misinformed. Either way, you’re wrong. Again.

  20. Terry Says:

Bill Clinton signed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act into law, peev.
Every time you write “No culpability for yourselves, for your party.” pot meets the kettle and so many fingers are pointng back at you that even your rose colored glasseyes will see them.

  21. Bike Bubba Says:

Wrong, AC? You mean Obama was actually behind the scenes, working hard to get the bill passed?

Oh, you mean he couldn’t be bothered to even make a single phone call to wavering Democrats, perhaps in the Black Caucus?

    Really?

You know, they say that when a man descends to profanity, he’s generally admitting his own inability to make an argument. Either that, or he’s not in need of a Nuttybuddy.

  22. Badda Says:

    Mr. D,
At least Baron Munchhausen would have blushed.

  23. jimf Says:

“For people like Craig and Foley, every day is pitchers and catchers.” Sort of like their master, Barney Frank

  24. Mr. Shirt Says:

    http://mises.org/books/TRTS/

Where do you think we are on this list? I’m thinking we’re special & currently knocking out 7,8 & 9 at the same time.

FWIW, I could buy AC’s idea that BHO is purposely trying to throw the economy in the tank for political gain. FDR did it in 1932, why should the power hungry dems not try it again? But I think he is simply out into deeper water than he can handle, & is trying to play it safe. He has no idea what to do, & no spine to do it with…

And that is how the “fiery orator” in step 8 makes “the strong man” possible in step 10. That’s why you should be afraid if he wins.

  25. angryclown Says:

You said Obama voted present, Bike Butthead, you silly little halfwit. You’re wrong. Of course.

  26. Bike Bubba Says:

Yes, you’re eminently qualified to evaluate exactly what I meant there.

And you’re projecting. And not in need of a Nuttybuddy.

  27. Terry Says:

Gosh, AC, you sound grumpy. I think your problem is obvious. Sexual frustration.
A few words to the wise. Tomorrow is date night. Don’t take your date to Denny’s. I know, Denny’s is under rated, especially the bacon cheeseburger. But just don’t.
Pick some Italian place with checkered table cloths and candles stuck in old chianti bottles. The chicks love that. Avoid talking about the really bad dates you’ve had. Don’t mention your mother. Also avoid crying, if possible.

  28. angryclown Says:

Dating advice from a guy with a plate in his head who lives in a volcano lair. Hey Blofeld, maybe you’d do better with the ladies if the first date didn’t involve sending a team of your minions to kidnap her, dress her up in a Barbarella-inspired outfit of your own design, then seat her at a long metallic table with you at the other end.

“So, do you watch `Gossip Girl?'”

  29. Terry Says:

I’m reading between the lines, AC. You were planning on taking your date to Denny’s, weren’t you?

  30. swiftee Says:

Word on the street is that the reason Assclown hasn’t had a date in years is because he is always too tired to take them out for a spin after he finishes inflating them.
