Stereotypes Reinforced While U Wait

By Mitch Berg

According to Paul Demko, a couple of Obama supporters drove 2,200 miles from Santa Cruz to Denver in a car completely covered in Obama stickers…:

While picking up my press credentials I came across this Volvo stationwagon parked in front of the Hampton Inn & Suites (doing double duty as the press epicenter for the Democratic Party). Sisters Samantha and Annie Woods drove the vehicle 2,200 miles from Santa Cruz, California. Most impressive: the Obamamobile lacks any air conditioning.

…thereby confirming a number of stereotypes.

  1. Democratic women are lousy navigators.  Mapquest shows the route is really more like 1,200 miles.
  2. A Volvo wagon.
  3. A Volvo wagon gets, what?  15 miles to the gallon?  Way to save energy, Clairol Twins.
  4. Obama stickers went for, what, a buck a pop?  Nope – no dissipate patricians here.
  5. I repeat:  a Volvo wagon.

Oh, lord, do I wish I were there with a camera.

Yeah, but there are hot. Not too bright, and they drive a Volvo and probably only listen to public radio, but what are you to do?

    lacks any air conditioning

    Chuck

They may be hot but you’ll want to wait until they’ve had a chance to freshen up in the hotel room. California girls get ripe too.

    But it’s a dry ripe.

    some things are never dry!

okay you guys, break it up!

Since they claim the Volvo “lacks air-conditioning”, it does beg the question of why ? To my knowledge Volvos come with a/c, so that means that they either ripped it out or are too cheap to fix and/or recharge it. Either way, why am I impressed ?

Also, there’s the issue of the exterior. If/when Obama loses, they’ll either ruin the finish on the car taking the stickers off, or they’ll look like those pathetic people with “Dukakis/Bentsen” or “Dump Spananus” bumper stickers left over from days gone by.

Actually, I’m told that European car makers used to withhold A/C. In fact, Mercedes had to fly executives and engineers to Arizona before they’d believe that they needed it in the States. So it’s not beyond belief that this thing was indeed shipped without it.

Of course, if you don’t have A/C and you’re driving across Nevada in August, maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to rent a car for a week instead.

Mileage actually isn’t too bad for those; 25 on the highway. With a 2.3 liter four under the hood, though, going across any mountains had to be “fun,” not to mention “risking breaking down at 10,000 feet.” Another reason to rent a 30mpg midsize for the week instead or fly.

My guess it was a circa 1970’s Volvo station wagon. Which puts it at about 10MPG of gas and 100MPQt of oil.

My dad went a little goofy in the early 70’s and bought a Volvo sedan…after years of Chevy Impalas. It was pretty nice quality-wise, but we didn’t have it long because he couldn’t stand to be passed…and when he drove to his job as a miner in Colorado, he went from 10,000 ft elevation to 12,000 feet in 12 miles and was passed A LOT. He traded it off while we were on vacation in Minnesota and got a 2-door Plymouth Fury…and that thing could go!! We got the Fury around the time I got my driver’s license….loved it! Course I could put a quarter’s worth of gas in and move the needle in those days….
