Didn’t See This Coming…

By Mitch Berg

The Carpenters Union has endorsed…

…Norm Coleman?

Rachel Stassen-Berger notes:

The backing is a switch — the 13,000-members union endorsed Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone in 2002 and Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar in 2006.

How bad are things going for Franken when even labor unions are shunning him?

UPDATE:  Ed is right:  the Carpenters Union did advertise on the Twin Cities’ Air America affiliate.

Is that a sign of how repulsive Franken is, or how liberal Coleman is?

  2. Mitch Berg Says:

Coleman isn’t that much more liberal than he was six years ago.

[…] When I occasionally listened to our local Air America affiliate, I heard plenty of advertising for unions — including, I believe, this particular union. I can’t find any supporting material from that period (I stopped listening even occasionally when I stopped commuting almost two years ago), but if my recollection is accurate, it’s an even bigger embarrassment for Franken. When his old sponsors at the liberal talk-radio network can’t bring themselves to publicly associate themselves with him, Minnesota Democrats have to wonder whether they can repair the damage Franken is doing to the brand. Knowing several unions guys (and gals), the political thing is always interesting. Most say they are 100% Democratic, yet hate the welfare state, are big second-amendment rights supporters, tend to be fairly libertarian (if all construction sites did random urine samples, nothing would ever get built). Basically saying that this isn’t the same as gov’t employees, including Big Education.

  5. Chuck Says:

Oh, and yes, a liberal like Norm can bring home the bacon. Remember that supposidly conservative Tommy Thompson was big road construction’s best friend in Wisconsin. Union construction workers will take the work, even if a Republican is funding it.

That’s the answer. Plenty of union carpenters had work when the Xcel Energy Center got built on Norm’s watch. The only thing Franken has ever built is ill will.

    That’s such a comfort.

    “Dial 1-800 handsaw”.

    That’s the one!
