My Final Verdict On The NFL Officiating “Scandal”

By Mitch Berg

Ahem.

  1. My God, who cares.  It’s a %#$@#^@! game.  Get a @$#@^@ grip.  Life goes on.
  2. This is what you get for changing the national pastime away from Baseball.

That is all.

Yep – it is only sports; a trip through, as a host on KFAN terms it, the ‘toy’ department. That said there are some metaphors or analogies or examples that come from the lockout that shouldn’t be ignored and might be useful.
For example… the impasse is not about pay. The ref’s make >$100K per season in what is not much more than a seasonal part time job. It is being driven by the Ref’s union demanding that the existing Ref’s get to keep their pension rather than as the league wants – all referees present and future – to convert to a 401K. The union is okay with newly hired Ref’s getting the 401K. Love when unions preach brotherhood and solidarity then hand their ‘younger’ brothers crumbs from the table. Anyone who reads knows that first the industrial corporations and now governments were and are going aground due to their pension obligations. Had to laugh this morning when I saw former PA Gov Rendell on MSDNC this morning claiming that the NFL should just give the Ref’s what they want – the fact that PA is way underwater on their pension obligations and Harrisburg (the city of) declared bankruptcy over them went un-noted.
Second – Nothing is better than competency. As is demonstrated on a daily if not hourly basis by our brave young attractive President – you can wear the uniform and blow the whistle, but if you don’t know how to do your job, others suffer.
Third – All sides like a fairly contested match. In my opinion, the reason the dominant media culture is now seeing levels of advertising at 50 year lows is that very few believe them to be impartial observers in the Presidential and many electoral races. Trumpeting Jim Graves internal poll that he is closing the gap with Bachmann while ignoring Kurt Bills internal poll that he is catching up to Sen Vanilla Fluff reminds thoughtful consumers of news that you aren’t capable of delivering fair judgement on the races of the day.

If you think that’s funny, syphlores, you should get a load of Scott Walker:

My take? That’s what you get when you put amateurs in charge. Rather like the Obama administration.

  4. Seflores Says:

So John Wayne Gacy is now reading a ‘tweet’ of frustrated PackerFan Gov Walker as supporting the Ref’s Union? Jay-sus, Angry Clown, do you stretch this much in your legal arguments?

  5. angryclown Says:

How dare you! John Wayne Gacy was ejected from the Brotherhood of Angry Clowns, by a plurality vote, in 1971.

Impressive work by the Brotherhood, since Gacy’s murderous trail didn’t start until 1972. Apparently they are clairvoyant, too.

  7. K-Rod Says:

Mitch, you care enough to devote a blog post. 😉

  8. Seflores Says:

Gacy was drummed out because he refused to use union labor when he was pouring all those concrete floors.

  9. Scott Hughes Says:

Had me thinking that when the players have been on strike I get a lot of needed yard work and such done. When the refs are on strike I find myself wishing I’d got a lot more yard and other work done. Unfortunately when none are on strike I more often find myself in front of the TV, asleep on the couch, dreaming I was doing something else.

Hogging all the smooth, young boys for himself was bound to piss the Brotherhood off eventually.
