Because “First Black President” Was Already Taken

Barack Obama is “The First Gay President”.

On the one hand, it’s only Andrew Sullivan.  I am only dimly aware that Sullivan was still blogging.

On the other hand?  Well, Jazz Shaw puts it well:

I’m not such a political neophyte as to suggest that this is unique in politics, but the bold faced, brazen machinations and ham handed plotting which have characterized this “evolution” in the President’s position on the subject at hand are rather breathtaking. And I’m not saying that people don’t actually “evolve” in their positions, beliefs or ideology. I know that my own attitudes and beliefs in my twenties were a far cry – in some instances at least – from where I stand in my fifties. Very few of us spring out of the halls of high school fully formed with all of the opinions we’ll hold until the grave.

But these evolutions generally take place over a long period of time, as exposure to new people and different ideas are examined and experimented with. Some are kept, others are rejected. Barack Obama, on the other hand, has gone in the course of less than a decade from full throated support of gay marriage to full opposition on religious grounds, back to full support. Are we really supposed to be buying this?

Ask Tina Brown.

I’m sure she thinks so.

I didn’t think Andrew Sullivan could do more to undercut the intellectual legitimacy of the left than his “Trigger” obsession – his demented notion that Trig Palin was Sarah’s baby.

Happy to say I was wrong.

  1. Newspeak thinks that this will be a positive for Oblamer. In spite of marriage amendments passing overwhelmingly whenever and wherever the people get a chance to vote on them.

  2. Last time, Americans had an opportunity to right a historic wrong by electing a Black man President, healing an ugly scar that disfigured the country for centuries.

He’s hoping it will work again but he has misjudged the moment. The populace isn’t reconciled to this crusade as it was to the First Black President one.

  3. So Obama is being lionized for taking a position almost identical to Reagan’s that it’s a matter for the states and not the feds?

  4. I did hear that, as part of this change, when Obama enters a room, instead of playing “Hail to the Chief,” the band will play Sylvester’s disco-era smash “You Make Me Feel Mighty Real.”

  5. Obama seems to be less interested in appealing to the middle and independents these days, doesn’t he?
“I think of all those in the plague years shut out of hospital rooms, thrown out of apartments, written out of wills, treated like human garbage because they loved another human being.”
Sullivan is insane. Who in the entire world, besides himself, thinks that being gay makes him be treated as “human garbage”? Who was being shut out of hospital rooms and written out of wills? Who keeps them out of hospital rooms? Stern nurse Ratchet? I’ve never been written into a will myself, what happened to my civil rights?

  6. Terry, nothing that Sullivan wails about couldn’t be corrected with other legal documents. If there was any demand for such documents you can bet that some blood sucking leech lawyer would be pedaling these packages now.
