The best novel I’ve read on the subject is Vernor Vinge’s A Fire Upon the Deep:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Fire_Upon_the_Deep
It doesn’t matter if a machine intelligence is self aware, what matters is if it has power and will. The only thing that can slow the spread of Vinge’s entity is the limiting speed of light. Even the gods — or those beings who pass for gods in Vinge’s future — can’t stop it.

I don’t know, as a HUGE terminator fan, this does kind of scare the shit out of me. We can only hope it becomes too self aware.
