You Are The Editor

One of this blog’s more consistently popular long-running features is my “Climate of Hate” page, in which I keep a running tally of episodes of liberals exercising their hatred of conservatives, usually via violence.  I started it at the height of the liberal media’s obsession with trying to find and pin an example of violence –any violence, any violence at all – on the Tea Party, to underscore the invariable accuracy of Berg’s  Seventh Law: “When a Liberal issues a group defamation or assault on conservatives’ ethics, character or respect for liberty or the truth, they are at best projecting, and at worst drawing attention away from their own misdeeds“.   And there are a lot of misdeeds.

And as we sift through the collapse of the media’s concerted, deliberate effort to frame the Martin case as a racial hate crime (and armed self-defense as a disaster, just to keep white liberals interested in the death of a black kid), it occurs to me – we need a similar feature for Media Witch Hunts.

What I”m looking for is cases where the media arrived at a conclusion prejudicial to some conservative institution or belief, looooong before the facts warranted it.  Especially if the facts were completely at odds with the conclusion.

It’s too early to say with the Martin case – but a few other examples pop to mind:

  • The Duke Lacrosse Team case.  Not that rich lacrosse players are a “conservative institution”, but the case had a political side too…
  • Tawanna Brawley
  • The 35W Bridge Collapse, which a good chunk of the Twin Cities media tried to politicize before actual engineering set in.
  • Anthropogenic Global Warming
  • The Burkett Papers / Sixty Minutes piece about George W. Bush’s Air National Guard record.
  • The Evanovich Shooting.  The Twin Cities media lionized the “victim” before they had to admit (quietly) that he was a thug.
Do you remember more?  Leave ’em in the comment section.  Links are appreciated but not necessary.

I think I’ll call it “The Conservative Is Obviously Guilty”.

  1. Not sure if this is quiet the same, but how about when a left wing group threatens a business or organization, and the media reporting of it is just leftest press releases:

    The homosexual lobby threatening Target.
The pro-abortion lobby threatening Susan G Komen.

Reading newspaper articles, you’d think the 90% of the population:
    A) Paid attention to these issues
    B) Are for gay marriage and abortion on demand without restrictions
    C) Were boycotting Target and the SGK fund.

There was zero balance to the stories. Nor was the full story told. For example, in the planned parenthood issue from this winter, no where did we read about what PP did with the free money they were getting, nor did MSM tell us what SGK was going to do with the funding. I heard that they had planned to buy expensive mamogram machines to use in underserved markets.

  2. In working to get Obama elected as our “first black president”, MSM wanted to portray Obama as a traditional African-American. The image that we decended from slaves, and grew up in a Jim Crow society. You have to wonder that in reality, did Obama ever see an African-American before he went to college.

They ran stories on Johm McCann having a slave owner in his family tree. But they failed to mention that Obama did too, as that did not fit their agenda.

  3. The Tuscon shooting? Many of us here at the DDE couldn’t believe how nuts this guy was, if he hadn’t shot people he would have made a great department leader, try as we might we couldn’t even follow his logic. I’m not sure how the media got that this guy was conservative, it just so happened that the politician he went after was a democrat (but a ‘blue dog’ one, I think she even had a primary challenger)

  4. 1. The Fort Hood shooting.
    2. “Reagan raised taxes”
    3. Fast and Furious / Operation Gunwalker

And if you haven’t fully settled on a name, might I humbly suggest “The Roland Friesler Institute of Justice”?

  5. CF how was the Ft.Hood shooting blamed on conservatives? All I remember was that the media twisted its spine into pretzels trying to avoid saying this guy was a radical Islamist; especially since he was shouting “Allah Ackbar” while in the middle of his shooting rampage.

  6. Can’t believe that you forgot Jared Loughner.

A Democratic Congresswoman has been shot in the head; another dozen were also shot.

We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was…

You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.

    -Paul Krugman,

  7. PoD, the issue at Fort Hood is primarily one of what the media isn’t reporting and what it refuses to admit. The Giffords shooting was blamed immediately on the Tea Party but no media connection to Nidal Hasan’s radical Islamism was ever made by the national media to my knowledge.

Rather, Chairman Zero’s desire to not ‘rush to judgment’ was the media meme. Therefore, the media’s sin there is one of omission. Double standard.

  8. ah I follow you now Flagg, it was a pretty glaring omission. I remember how anyone who wanted to call Hasan a radical Islamist who hated America was labeled an Islamophobe. We were very proud of Obama’s Department of Propoganda on that one, of course the mere fact I just mentioned that means I am probably in trouble…

  9. The two I can think of that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Richard Jewell, the Atlanta Olympics bombing suspect who got fingered because (a) he was trying to help and (b) looked like a mall cop before the term came into use.

Reagan’s Labor Secretary, Raymond Donovan, wrongly accused of corruption, who later asked “where do I go to get my reputation back?”

  10. Well, there is still the common belief among media types that conservatives plotted the assassination of Kennedy, even though Lee Harvey Oswald was a communist sympathizer, admirer of Castro, a one-time dweller in the Soviet Union, and husband to a Russian national.

  11. *chuckle* In trouble with who, exactly, PoD? I only know of one entity more powerful than you.

(no, I’m not thinking of Hillary!)

  12. Oh, yes, I remember Richard Jewel. The FBI searched his house and gravely announced that they had discovered “bomb making materials” in his garage.
The bomb making materials found in his garage were screws and electrical tape.

  13. To give you a hint though, lets just say that the cold war isn’t over, and its about to get A LOT warmer. Obama’s hot microphone let it slip out way too soon

  14. well there goes that classic line from the “It gets better” campaign that heterosexuals are never made fun of or hurt by homosexuals.

  15. POD, you must know that people who do bad homo things are really heterosexual. Isn’t John Wayne Gacey one o’ yours?

  16. shh… we scrubbed him away from history. You ask anyone under 30 who that is and theres a 70%+ chance they have no idea what he is ahem, famous for.

  17. Republican Congressman Mark Foley sent some emails to some male pages in the House which set off a s**t storm of controversy prior to the ’08 elections(?). Tarnished the Republican brand and the nets couldn’t keep their salacious hands off the story for months – a gay Republican predator! Ohhhhhh, how it tweaked their sense of sweet, ironic hypocrisy!

Q: Is the Prince of Darkness a registered Dem – or are you an Equal Opportunity abuser?

  18. Mr. Stink, Foley did nothing illegal or against house rules. Now, Barney Frank . . .

  19. Stink, evil knows no bounds I go where I am needed, Mark Foley was an idiot and we did our best to cover for him, but that moron made it impossible. The only thing that registers with me is green. You pay we help, we turn away no one. I have special admiration for Carville, Begala, and Rove, they are the only members of the DDE that are allowed on TV, otherwise we couldn’t accomplish anything. Besides the interns get tired of Carville having his one eye snake looking at them so we send him to the surface.

  20. Geez, Berg. I think someone is tapping their foot in a stall in your comment section. Be sure to use the Purell.

  21. Terry: Barney Frank is off limits. He has almost solely responsible for my house being worth 50K less today than before the crash, but because he is a member of a “protected minority,” whatever he says or does is beyond criticism. Foley did nothing wrong, legally, but consider his greatest sin – Republicanism.

  22. I have it on good authority that if Foley was a democrat he would have been covered for.

  23. The James Byrd ad. During the 2000 Presiential election, the Democrats tried to tie Texas Gov./ Presidential candidate George W. Bush with the brutal lynching-murder, where 3 racists dragged Byrd behind a pick-up truck.

  24. What about Palin’s daughter (name?) That she was knocked up out of wedlock was another delicious bit of liberal irony. The only thing that would have made their story more delectable would have been if she would have aborted with a coat hanger in a back alley, developed sepsis and slipped into a coma for which Sarah and Todd would have been forced to either pull the plug or feed her intravenously in perpetuity.

  25. This story is re-developing on WND. The murder of State Chairman of Arkansas Democrat Party Bill Gwatney in 2008, 2 weeks before the DEM NAT’L Convention where Obama was nominated. Sean Hannity and Michelle Malkin were blamed.

  26. Well, this one was more of a lack of coverage by the left wing ministry of propaganda. There was that nut job professor that was denied tenure so she went out and got a gun then came back a shot a few of her deniers. The Teacher’s Unions got that one shut up pretty fast. She even looked like Squeaky Fromm with glasses.

  27. Hey bosshoss, The college professor’s name was Amy Bishop, and it happened at the University of Alabama-Huntsville in 2010.

  28. Has any network ever done a thorough examination as to whether Charles Manson is a Republican? Might be time.

  29. All,

    Thanks!

Bear in mind, some of what you’ve written fits into (and is already in) my “Climate of Hate” page, which documents liberals’ propensity to violence. If you missed the link above, check it out here. It’s long and damning (and this exchange may have led to more examples for use under that cover; we’ll see).

This is a separate, similar, but parallel effort; not so much episodes of “hate”, but episodes of the media writing to a narrative and ending up wrong (not that anyone would usually know).

  30. Sparkman (mentioned above) is featured prominently in “Climate of Hate” – but may actually be more appropriate in the new category.

  31. Here is a HUGE one. The Catholic church and its “pedophile priests”. MSM loves to use that term.
Pedophiles like little kids…say age 3-5 and don’t care if it is male or female (doesn’t really matter at that age).
The Catholic church had a problem with homosexual priests who like teenage boys. But the gays are a protected class.

  32. Personally I hate hate. Does that make me a bad person? No. Being a Republican? Yup.
