Tone Perfect
By Mitch Berg
So yesterday I read Doug Grow for the first time since he left the Strib. It was a review of P.J. O’Rourke’s speech at the Northrup. And since it’s the first thing I’ve read from Grow now that he’s working for an overtly-political “news” outlet (The MNPost), I have to ask…
…is he doing anything different?

Where is it? I’d love to compare Grow’s screed with reality.

He’s being read and paid less.

I don’t recall a lot of nervous laughter or reluctant laughter. I recall plenty of “it’s funny because it’s true” laughs.
Certainly, the place didn’t erupt with laughs. He’s better read than heard… as a writer, that’s no surprise. Dennis Miller (who he referred to at one point) does it better, because he’s a stage and television screen performer.
All the same, he was great. I laughed more than I should because I tried to think of reading his comments instead of hearing it… plus, he used enough references to “Parliament of Whores”, which is genius work.
My friend asked O’Rourke about his colaboration on the Double Blind-Drunk Wine Tasting with Chris Buckley. If you haven’t read that… stop what you’re doing, and check it out.
(Must look for the link.)

I was there. Boy, I didn’t know that Doug Grow was there too! To be in the same room as Grow, WOW! Imagine that, Doug Grow, it the heart of the beast.
He was funny. He’s got some great one liners. He had a few jabs directed at McCain, Bush, other Republicans, too.
Doug tries to get worked up over this and there just wasn’t much to get worked up over.
