The Plan

A neighbor emailed me:

How to solve illegal immigration with the least amount of government intrusion.

From Conor Friedersdorf, an idea that will never be implemented:  grant amnesty to any illegal immigrant who came forward to show that he’d been hired sans documents, fine his employer, and give him a green card.

It’d spark compliance – and build a whole new reality TV genre, with thousands of new jobs!

  1. One small flaw in the plan. The illegal is working, theoretically why they came here in the first place. How likely is it that they will crap on the hand that’s feeding them? Add to that the overall level of trust in agencies like ICE and I’d say you participation rate would be, to be generous, fairly low.

  2. I had business to conduct downtown Mpls yesterday. Took the light rail to gov’t plaza station and walked towards Marquette. Passed by the occupiers. They are on all four sides of the big gov’t building. Its a mess. Junk everywhere. It looks like a refugee camp in Ethiopia. They don’t allow smoking on gov’t property, so the smokers were standing on the sidewalks to smoke.
Even though the weather isn’t that great anymore, the government workers, Accenture and Lutheran Brotherhood employees must be pissed at losing their nice outside areas to go out for a break or a walk. You really have to see it to understand what a mess the looney left has made. The only consolation is that propably 95% of the government workers in Minneapolis vote Democrat, so these are their people.

  3. So Immigrant X accuses me of hiring him just so he can get a green card. Even though I’ve never seen him before. Sorting this out won’t involve any “gov’t intrusion”? And this helps who, exactly? Next…….

Agreed, I’ve never gotten a job from an employer that didn’t require me to provide two forms of identification to prove that I was legally eligible to work in the United States. I suspect that’s the way it is with most major companies and that the majority of employers of illegal aliens are (a) individual homeowners looking for landscaping, child care, housekeeping etc. or (b) smaller contractors and sub-contractors who hire people to provide services (e.g. construction, janitorial, etc.) for other parties.

  5. Like the Buffet plan for balancing the budget, it will never happen, but it puts the incentives in the right places.

Earsall, if immigrant X accuses you of hiring him but doesn’t have any solid evidence, then immigrant X has just outed himself to the INS.

On the other hand, if immigrant X can say that he works in the kitchen at such-and-such restaurant, it should be pretty easy for an INS agent to show up at that location and verify that he works there.

The Buffet plan: “anytime there is a deficit of more than 3% of GDP all sitting members of Congress are ineligible for reelection.”
