Ramco: Just To Be Clear
By Mitch Berg
Let’s make sure we’re clear on what happened at the Ramsey County Charter Commission last night.
The 10-8 vote did not impose a tax It rejected an amendment the county charter that would have allowed a referendum on the Ramco Commission’s agreement with the Vikings to ask the state to exempt the plan from a referendum on a sales tax hike to pay for the stadium – which is contrary to state law and the county’s charter.
There are really only four things, now, that can come between Ramco’s taxpayers and a generation of paying Wilfare:
- If your state legislator supports this boondoggle – a give-away to Zygi Wilf and the DFL’s trade-union water-carriers – they need to hear from you.
- The downtown “Brotherhood” will have to find a way to steal the project for downtown Minneapolis. Don’t rule this out.
- The Ramco Commission needs to hear from we, the residents, that this must not pass. I doubt it’ll work, but it’s worth at try.
- Ramsey County voters will need to wake up and realize what a bunch of hamsters the DFL-dominated Ramco Commission is.

Us Henco stooges paid for Target Field. It’s your turn, Ramco. Don’t forget to repeat “Thank you sir, may I have another” for however many years your “temporary” sales tax hike is in effect.

“Wilfare.” That is genius.

or 5. Katherine Kersten, Jason Lewis, and other high-profile champions of smaller government speak up, repeatedly.
I kid, I kid.

Re the “Brotherhood,” it’s evident that they are trying to steal the project, but there’s no way that Wilf will go back there without a replacement revenue stream for the parking money he expects to get out of Arden Hills. He’ll move the team before he does that.
One other thing — while the Ramco County Commission are in the main a bunch of DFL hamsters, the point guy on this has been Tony Bennett, who is a Republican. Or so he says.

Re: Tony Bennet
Here’s his Legislative biography:

And here’s his campaign contributions:

I think he’s a Republican in the style of Rudy Boschwitz and Norm Coleman* (both of whom I’ve met, personally like and voted for every chance I’ve gotten in the general election) – strong on national defense, tough on crime, supports tax cuts, etc. but when it comes to cutting spending, he kind of punts on the tougher issues and is from that generation where being a Republican meant being “pro-business” as opposed to “pro-free market.”
* I would not put him in the same vein as Arnie Carlson or Dave Durenberger.

Thorley, I’m less concerned with what Bennett was than what he is. And right now he’s attempting to commit Ramsey County to a tax hike and a project that is certainly going to saddle the County with hundreds of millions of debt.
