We Tried To Warn You

By Mitch Berg

We really did.

“Socializing 1/7 of the economy”, we tried to tell the other 52-odd-% of you,”will screw up the economy even worse than it already is”.

And we were right:

Private-sector job creation initially recovered from the recession at a normal rate, leading to predictions last year of a “Recovery Summer.” Since April 2010, however, net private-sector job creation has stalled. Within two months of the passage of Obamacare, the job market stopped improving. This suggests that businesses are not exaggerating when they tell pollsters that the new health care law is holding back hiring. The law significantly raises business costs and creates considerable uncertainty about the future. To encourage hiring, Congress should repeal Obamacare.

Some of us are trying.  We really are.

Remember when you were a kid and your cousin taught you a game . . . but the rules changed at your cousin’s whim? Hard to know what strategy would win. Made you want to sit tight and hold onto what you have, take no chances.

Now imagine you run a small business, maybe an auto repair shop, a print shop, a family restaurant or a hardware store – drive Snelling Avenue and take your pick. Imagine you’ve invested 15 years of your life working 60 hours per week, skipping vacations, sometimes skipping paychecks so the employees got paid . . . andnow the government tells you the rules will be changing soon to add more items to the Expenses side of your balance sheet, but we don’t know how much or for how long.

Add the current banking situation where credit is tight so borrowing is not a solution, and throw in an economy where people have been cutting back on non-essential spending since 2008.

What’s the likelihood you’ll be adding staff?

How often do conservatives have to be right before they start listening to us?

Dennis Prager says it best: “The Left destroys everything it touches.” All I can add to this is that we said Obama would be Jimmy Carter 2.0 and he has surpassed all expectations.

  3. Kermit Says:

But, ahh…Barack Obama has created over 2 million jobs. Just ask him.

  4. nerdbert Says:

Almost, Kerm. His Hussein-ness claims to have created OR SAVED 2 million jobs. It’s that critical OR qualifier that keeps his ass covered since it can’t be measured.

  5. Rob Says:

And Government jobs should never count in those numbers…

  6. Kermit Says:

Last time I heard him lie…er…make that claim, His Obamaness left out the saved part of the lie.

  7. Night Writer Says:

And 110% of those who job he created or saved are in favor of raising taxes.

Because “we have to pass it so you can see what is in it” wasn’t a strong enough hint, apparently. Overcoming an obstinate, willful stupidity is a difficult task. :-/

    That graph is misleading.
Private sector job creation in the 1st decade of the the 21st century was terrible. Bush added just 133,000 (net) after 8 years — and that is only if you leave out his last three weeks in office: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/249624/more-job-creation-veronique-de-rugy
Globalization has not been good for unskilled and semi-skilled American workers.

My primary client for freelance articles is now paying me anywhere from $3k to $6k+ a month. I inquired once whether they’d be interested in hiring me full time and was informed it’s cheaper to pay me $1/word right now than take on the uncertain costs of benefits. Rather than hiring new, they also fill most new positions by shuffling people around internally.

Ah, the law of unintended consequences. . .
