It Was Twenty Years Ago Today, Part LXXXIX

By Mitch Berg

It was Monday, August 15, 1988.

I called the guy with the apartment – the affordable, gorgeous apartment with the $275/month rent in the not-tops-but-who-cares-I’m-6’5-and-have-a-gun neighborhood…

…and told him I was gonna find a place with my roommates.

I think it was the commitment of jumping my rent $100 a month higher, looking back.

But I do remember that I knew almost instantly it was a very bad idea.

Minimum wage then was about what? $3.85? You could have gotten that retail job for $3.85, worked 15 hours a week, take home pay would have covered that and a little extra for beer.

    What were you thinking?!

Colleen, we’ve got to be careful that we don’t turn this thread into a venting of everyone’s stupid decisions. Alone, I could fill the thread so full that PB and Clown would no longer look long-winded in comparison. Mitch should impose a limit of one sad anecdote per contributor if the thread starts to run away.
