The Tiny Tent

It’s a phenomenon I’ve long found perplexing; otherwise-smart women who, when the subject is politics, will always vote for the woman first.  Or, should I say, “always” vote for the female candidate, since they are frequently women who grunt and roll their eyes when the likes of Margaret Thatcher or Condi Rice are mentioned; what they mean, naturally, is liberal women.

Oprah endorsed Obie.  And it’s ruffling some of that same wad of feathers:

Yet a backlash by Clinton supporters appears to have prompted a rethink by Winfrey, the African-American media titan who is routinely described as the most influential woman on television…a reader called austaz68 said she “cannot believe that women all over this country are not up in arms over Oprah’s backing of Obama. For the first time in history we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN. She’s choosing her race over her gender.”

I’ve met people – most of them women – who literally say, in as many words, they vote for women first, regardless of their policies.  Of course, most of these people are in Saint Paul, where the only real choice in politicians is “liberal” or “more liberal”.

  1. I would not vote for a woman unless she was a tried-and-true conservative (Margaret Thatcher), but Oprah endorsing anyone (male or female) would be the nail in the coffin. Women are such ninnys. Can’t the woman who wants Hillary vote for whomever she wants without Oprah giving her the warm fuzzies about her choice? Ninny. It just points up how the libs are in such a quandary-female or black? Which pandered-to group do we pick? I would love to have the choice of a strong, smart female on the right, but some over-rated TV host would not influence my decision.

  2. You do know that females have two =X= chromosomes, don’t you? Somebody with “a pair of Y chromosomes” would be one of those “extra Y chromosome” men that are considered abnormally more aggressive and prone to criminal behavior. (Not necessarily scientifically valid, BTW).

Come to think of it, maybe that IS what you mean. Women in politics tend to be more aggressive and, in at least one female candidate I could name, prone to criminal behavior.

  3. HRC freaks me out. i instinctively don’t trust her. There are a lot of women out there who are slimy and will say whatever it takes, and she is the worst. i also think she’ll do her best to make us feel as bad about ourselves and make us feel personally responsible for everything wrong with America. So here’s one woman who will NOT be voting for her.

  4. There is an appallingly high number of females out there who WILL vote for HRC based on her sex alone. It is stunning – and disgusting.

I still think women shouldn’t be able to vote. Burke may have been right, you know.

Perhaps the only woman I’d feel comfortable voting for is Maggie Thatcher.
