No Fly
By Mitch Berg
President Obama may be taking a break from his busy schedule of, apparently, breaks – assuming they avoid the shutdown.
And I found this more than a little bit ominous (emphasis added):
On Thursday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration established a no-fly zone over Williamsburg that will be in place from Friday through Monday.
Not a plane will fly over Williamsburg for month. And civilian casualties could get quickly out of hand…

Pfft. Fly into Norfolk, Newport News or Richmond if you don’t mind the drive. Newport News is a 15 minute drive to Williamsburg.

In 1980 I had to go to Williamsburg on business and flew a red-eye from Phoenix to D.C. and caught a twin-propeller puddle-jumper to Newport News; the “plane” looked like a pregnant guppy and the entire back wall was a drawbridge that opened to allow loading of luggage. I recall the bus ride from Newport News to Williamsburg was 45 minutes, rather than 15, but I was pretty addled by my flights and the amount of time I had been awake at that point. All in all, not my favorite trip in my life….except that that expedition ultimately led me to getting a job in the Twin Cities later that year. And what a difference that has made in my life!

The airport at Newport News is on I64 quite a bit north of the city. The drive may be more than 15 minutes, I confess I’ve only made it four or five times. Beautiful country, though. I think they created the word “verdant” to describe it.
