“It’s Going To Destroy The Midway”

By Mitch Berg

That was  quote from a store owner in the Midway, on a Fox9 news piece on the closing of Porky’s this morning.

Porky’s, a drive-in burger joint that’s operated in the Midway since 1953, is closing up because of the light rail.  How can you run a drive-in with no cars?  Traffic is a burgeoning nightmare on University, and it’s going to get worse for the next three years, and then…it’ll stay bad.

The regional media, “urban studies” clacque and the DFL have been trying to paint a happy face on the destruction of the Midway – and the decay of the inner Twin Cities that it represents.

More on that starting either later today or Monday.

This is today’s DFL: 19th century solutions for 21st century problems.

Hamburgers are bad for you. French fries are bad for you. Milk shakes are bad for you.
Our overlords have simply eliminated another public health hazard.

I love how all the stinking moonbats that were so against chain stores are now so happy to toss this local business under the bus…fucking hypocrits. (Have I said that before?)

    (Have I said that before?)

Sure, but it bears repeating, Swiftee.

The saddest part is that urban planners intentionally destroyed the Rondo neighborhood to create a central corridor between the two downtowns so people would NOT have to crawl down University Avenue but could whisk along at traffic speed on their own individual schedules; and now we’re intentionally destroying University Avenue so people riding the train can crawl along between downtowns on the train’s schedule.

Does this mean we can stop having Rondo days now? Or will we simply be adding Frogtown-Midway Days to the victim calendar?

I turned 50 but I can’t afford a mistress so I’m shopping for a red sports car instead. Had my eye on a Mazda Miata but the Miata is rear-wheel drive with six inches of snow clearance. This week, I realized I can’t have that either.

I live in St. Paul where they don’t plow the streets in the winter, and when the streets finally melt clear, they’re a mass of potholes. The Monster Truck Cinderblock Torture Test is nothing – take a spin down Lexington or Pierce Butler. For a solid 4 months out of the year, I need an off-road vehicle to get around town. Jeep Wrangler, maybe. Ford Ranger 4×4. They come in red.

I finally figured it out: I live in St. Paul. That’s why I can’t have nice things.

Well Nate, that’s just one of the many reasons I live in my inner ring suburb. The streets are plowed punctually, we have a strong police presence, and I have four grocery stores and ten gas stations all in a five mile radius.
Back in my blogging days I wrote a post In Praise of the Suburbs. It hasn’t changed. I will NEVER live in Minneapolis or St. Paul (and I have lived in Mpls).

Had me thinking it’s probably not the mistress that I couldn’t afford, it would be the wife that I couldn’t afford after she found out about the mistress. Stay with the car, it’s undoubtedly cheaper. (wink)

I grew up in Mpls, moved rural over 25yrs ago, and I’m NEVER going back. I don’t even like driving through the cesspool.

The University Ave destruction was the final straw, but the owners also sited high taxes in St Paul as a reason for closing.

    swiftee;

Same thing happening in WI from the union goons. They are threatening small businesses with boycotts if the owners won’t support their socialism. Typical bite the hand that feeds them mentality. Lost businesses = lost dreams of the business owner = lost tax revenue = layoffs of worthless scum!

    Nate:

Sports cars require entirely as much care, feeding and attention as mistresses. Ask me how I know…
