Bonds indicted for perjury, obstruction of justice:

The perjury case against former Giants star Barry Bonds is built on documents seized in a federal raid on a Burlingame steroids lab and positive drug test results indicating that baseball’s all-time home run king used steroids, court records show.Bonds, perhaps the greatest hitter of his generation, was indicted Thursday on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. He is accused of lying under oath in December 2003 when he told the grand jury that investigated the BALCO steroid ring that he had never used banned drugs.

Waaah.

That’s right; gotta get Bonds, to protect “the integrity of the game“.

  1. Well, they’ve gotta get Bonds to protect the integrity of the federal criminal justice system. The integrity of the game, where performance-enhancing drugs are concerned, is a ship that sailed a long time ago. Bidding farewell from the dock were Bud Selig and every fan and sportswriter who professed to see nothing unusual in 70-home-run seasons from star players and middle-rank second basement who hit 40.

  2. See? Mitch and Angryclown agree on the most important issues: baseball, music, city life. It is inevitable that all the smart thinking in non-political half of Mitch’s brain will one day find a way to seize control of the other half.

  3. the Mitch /’mitch’ battle going on in his head

That battle goes on only in Flash’s head!

Mitch, mitch, even Mytcz, all coexist happily if chaotically in one lil’ ol’ brain.

  4. “Mitch, mitch, even Mytcz, all coexist happily if chaotically in one lil’ ol’ brain.”

My point exactly, you are coming around, if ever so slowly.

    Flash

  5. Uh oh:

you are coming around, if ever so slowly

    I’d best fix that, then:

The Swift Boat Vets were right about Kerry on every solitary point.

George Soros funds most of the local lefty alternative media.

Betty McCollum swims after troop ships.

There. That should push me back to the “Mitch” side. Or the “mitch” side. I forget which is which.

  6. I agree that this is more ado than needed… and like AC, agree with Mitch on most things baseball.

Bonds cheated (apparently) and I’m very sad for him. Apparently it started when he saw all the accolades that McGuire (cheater) and Sosa (probably a cheater) got for the home run race in 95 (iirc) when McGuire (cheater) had softballs tossed up for him, including hitting what, 3 in one day on the last day of the season?

Bonds, conversely, despite being a cheater, didn’t have ANYONE cutting him a break during 2001 – yet hit 73. The point being, he was supremely talented, probably the best player we’ll ever see (in our lifetimes) – but due to stupidity, arrogance, insecurity – take your pick though he’s actually an extremely intelligent guy – he decided that rather than finishing easily with 500 stolen bases, and 600 home runs, or, had he pushed it, 600 stolen bases – and easily one of the top players ever, he needed to cheat.

It’s sad, he’s hardly alone, but he’ll be vilified because he wasn’t the ‘golden child’ of the sports media world. Stupid Bonds, stupid(erer) press.

  7. And Mitch, I think Flash and AC have the right of it, get you away from politics, and you’re a fine fella.

  8. Gotta disagree with you on the sympathy for Bonds, Peev. He was fabulously talented – a first ballot Cooperstown shoe-in who would likely have broken Aaron’s record without the juice. But he made the choice to cheat. Not the press, not the fans. Screw Bonds, screw Rose, screw Shoeless Joe.

  9. Here’s a good reference..

    http://sportsbiotch.blogspot.com/2007/10/ty-cobb-makes-barry-bonds-look-like.html

Cobb was a first class racist, brutal, wife-beating pig.. yet was elected with a higher vote total than Ruth.

AC- If I gave any inference that Bonds wasn’t responsible, I apologize, I utterly, completely, and totally agree, it’s his fault, and only his, especially since he is a bright man – not easily lead down the garden path.

My point was, w/o the juice, he’d not have broken Aaron’s record, but his other records would have bespoke a career of fabulous skill and talent, he needed NOTHING, no cheating, yet cheated nevertheless, for which, he was a brilliant, but utterly human fool.

Yet the press chooses to vilify him, while ignoring McGwire (went and looked up how to spell that), and mostly, Sosa, and definetely Clemens, or dozens of other pitchers who likely were taking illegal performance enhancing drugs – mostly just because they (and we probably as an outgrowth) just flat out, don’t like Bonds. I don’t really think it’s because he’s black, though Charles Barkely once said he thinks any ‘uppity black’ is going to be hated by the public and press, but I’m not sure it’s not a contributor either. We rooted for McGwire, and some for Sosa, but he was ‘latin’ more than ‘black’ maybe – or at least, he was a LOT more endearing. In Bond’s case, he was a mouthy, arrogant, loner, who didn’t help his teammates much, and who’s teammates didn’t much like, especially the other cocky, self-important ones (Will Clark, Jeff Kent). Bonds, with ANY real support in the line-up, which he only had a couple of years of his career, would have shattered the all-time RBI total easily, w/o steroids, would have broken the all-time runs scored total, w/o steroids.. he was magnificent on the bases, and in the field… and threw it all away to ‘regain the spotlight” or so it seems. Tragic. truly tragic.

Cobb probably threw games, which is the corruption of foundational premise on which the popularity of ANY sport stands, that the game ISN’T fixed, and that’s the reason betting on it is SO forbidden, because it could destroy the public’s trust in the outcome, and with it, the sport (whatever sport) itself. That’s why Rose is banned, and should be. That’s why Jackson was banned, and while no proof exists he threw games, it doesn’t matter, he crossed the uncrossable line, and so should have been banned… as should have Cobb.

Bonds didn’t throw any games, didn’t commit the ultimate taboo, but will be thought of and spoken of in the same breath and voice as Rose or Jackson, as has been done here. He should be thought of in the same vein as Strawberry or Howe or McGwire or Gooden. He used illegal drugs, in this case to enhance his in-game performance – I don’t know that he should be vilified more than they were or are. On that, perhaps, you and I (AC) disagree.

  10. Gotta disagree with you on the sympathy for Bonds, Peev.

I’m gonna (choke, choke) agree with AC (choke, choke, choke) on this one.

  11. Kel – if you were able to discern anything from the written word – which clearly you can’t – you’d see I don’t have sympathy for him..

“I apologize, I utterly, completely, and totally agree, it’s his fault, and only his, especially since he is a bright man – not easily lead down the garden path.”

Just like when I GAVE you the source of information about where I came to my opinion about the wisdom of Mike Opat’s conduct BEFORE you screamed for an answer to Where I got that information…

Beyond that, doofus, you’d do a lot worse than agreeing with AC on everything, even when he’s wrong, he’s a lot closer to right than you’ll ever be, on anything, ever.

and you Lilliputians complain about reading comprehension, omg.

  12. I don’t think the press has been unduly hard on Bonds. He’s a cheat and an asshole. The reason he’s had a bigger fall than Sosa, McGwire and others is because he occupied a much higher perch. And he got caught. While a lot of players have been suspected, Bonds is the one who’s been indicted. I honestly can’t see this as anything other than a guy getting exactly what he asked for.

  13. “and you Lilliputians complain about reading comprehension, omg.”

Well, yeah. It’s pretty easy to comprehend AC comments, wrong as they are. He stays on topic and is a clear writer with correct punctuation. Yours kind of drift and take forever to weed thru.

Bonds is a dick, no doubt about it.
If only Giamatti had a better heart.

“The Swift Boat Vets were right about Kerry on every solitary point.
George Soros funds most of the local lefty alternative media.
Betty McCollum swims after troop ships.”

    Welcome back.

  14. Peev is more discursive than Angryclown, to be sure. But there are many paths from wingnut darkness into the light of truth and goodness. Peev merely prefers the scenic route.

  15. Charles Barkely once said he thinks any ‘uppity black’ is going to be hated by the public and press

Barkley did just fine with the press, until he came out as a Republican.

  16. And then what happened, Uncle Mitchie? Did the mean old press set his house on fire and take his money away?

  17. They put him in a car with Nancy Pelosi.

He was never the same after that. He seemed…hollow.

  18. Barkely became a republican, then, as memory serves said.

“I don’t know why anone, who is rich, wouldn’t be a republican, and I don’t know why anyone who isn’t, would (be).”

Buzz, I realize saying I think Bonds is totally responsible is a lot of words, but then again 10 really isn’t a lot, admit you F-d up and say, woops, like big people do. Oh, that’s right, in neo-conville, being a neo-con means never admitting to error.
