Return of Innocence

By Mitch Berg

After last fall’s incident involving middle school kids passing meth around in class, among other things,  this sordid incident almost seems like a return to a simpler, more innocent time:

Tipped off by some odd behavior during science class and a 15-year-old who had trouble negotiating a school stairway, St. Paul school officials discovered that four girls had shared a water bottle filled with vodka during their second-hour class Monday.

It almost seems like something Beaver Cleaver would do, in context.

Perhaps, but in light of the young woman drinking herself to death to celebrate her 21st birthday it is still, well, sobering.

    Reminds me of 7th grade.

Yeah, in my day, the girls would bring warm beer and drink it in the bathroom.

Or in my older brothers day, the drinking age in Wisc was 18. If you were held back a year, you were 18 during your Jr year of high school. 11th graders would legelly go and have a couple of beers over lunch.

In my day it was 18 also. We would go to lunch at Chi-Chi’s and have happy hour, two for one, margaritas. One guy was 18, two were 17 and I was 16. The first guy used his DL for id, the second used the first guy’s pilot license, the Third guy used the first guys DL again, (back then paper license, no picture) and I looked older than all of them so I wasnt carded. Good times then. Child abuse, lock up your pets, call SWAT, kick out of school and into juvi-detention now.
