The Media Wants A Horserace

So I caught the Channel Five news just now.  Channel Five’s 10PM news opened with a stock shot of Jesse Ventura, and asked “could we be heading for a repeat?”

This was how they kicked off their segment on the latest KSTP/Survey USA poll.

I braced myself for another three way race, like back in 2002.

In fact, Dayton was down to 38 (from 46 in the last Survey USA poll); Emmer up to 36 (from 32), and Horner was at…

18.  Up from 9.

And here’s a prediction; he’s peaked.  And if he hasn’t, he’ll be taking voters from the DFL.

  1. And I would wager that the polling took place before Emmer’s plan hit. Horner will start to fade as people realize that he’s just Dayton on the installment plan.

  2. Mr. D;

    “he’s just Dayton on the installment plan.”

    Probably the most politically astute observation of Horner to date!

  3. There’s an anecdote (probably apocryphal, I suppose) about a test race between an American car and a Russian car, back during the Cold War. The American car easily won.

    Supposedly, Pravda’s headline for its report read, “RUSSIAN CAR PLACES SECOND; AMERICAN CAR SECOND TO LAST.”

  4. “he’ll be taking voters from the DFL.”

    Exactly, Horner is Emmer’s best friend and only way he can win.

    Lars, I recall a story back during the space race. The American spent considerable time, money, and effort, designing an anti gravity pen. Through long, expensive, and painstaking research, they came up with what we know as the PowerPoint pen. The Russians . . . they just used a pencil *grin*

  5. Horner is Emmer’s best friend and only way he can win

    Perhaps, but that’s not how the DFL’s been spinning it – indeed, spending a fortune to spin it. They’ve been trying to push the notion that Horner, like Carlson and Durenberger, are all Republicans, ergo we should all fall in line.

    In the post-Paulbot, post-Tea Part world, people just aren’t buying it. The SUSA/KSTP poll showed Horner drawing evenly, which is a net defeat (at least in terms of wasted money and effort) for the DFL’s spin effort.

  6. Mitch, see, we can agree on somethings *smile* The attempt by the DFL Spin factory was to get Right leaners to peel off of Emmer like they traditionally do from the DFL candidate towards Indy. That fact that it is an even split, rather than tilted Left may be a small victory. But the truth is, the Right Wing Base is a much stronger more disciplined commodity, whereas the Left’s is like hearding cats.

    With Horner in the race, tea party Republican’s like Emmer don’t have to move to the middle, he just needs to keep his base corralled. Horner will do the rest for him.

    If I had to wager today, Emmer by 3 and may not even break 40%, with Horner breaking 20% (something like 39 Emmer, 36 Dayton, 25 Horner)

    Flash

    Are you serious, flash? Haven’t you seen the primary results of the last few weeks?
    I suspect that many of the people you think of as the “Left Wing Base” are what most people refer to as “independents”.

  8. McCollum beat her primary opponent 87%-13%.
    In the GOP primary for District 4, Collet won 67%-33% over Jack Shepard, a convicted and at large felon who ran his election campaign from somewhere in Europe.
    Jeez, Flash, the 4th is your district! Herding cats indeed.

  9. flash in case you didn’t notice the DFL is running Mark Dayton. Mark Dayton would have lost to a write in candidate after his performance in the Senate.

    I know that DFLers have short memories but not all Minnesotans are DFLers.

    Going up to the Range this weekend will listen for the pro gun, pro life Dayton ads.

  10. jpmn;

    Better get a parabolic mike for that!

    If you have the opportunity to do so, ask some of those rangers if they have heard of HR 45, then ask if they know that Oberspend is supporting it.

  11. boss, Brave Sir Mark ran as a social conservative in his Senate race on the Range. Funny that the ads I heard up there were completely different from the ads I was listening to down here. I expect the same this time around, maybe on Mitch’s trips to Fargo he will hear the same thing.

    As far as Oberspend (I like that) as long as he is bringing home the construction jobs it doesn’t seem to matter that the mines are closed, you can’t build a home or cabin within 1/2 mile of a lake or even that their kids have no future if they stay home.
