Bow And Scrape, Peasants!

By Mitch Berg

Joan Vennochi in the Boston Glob: The Dems are now the party of patrician privilege:

From Newport, R.I., where Kerry’s “Isabel’’ was berthed before heading to Nantucket, to Rhinebeck, N.Y., where Chelsea Clinton was married in a mansion modeled after Versailles, today’s Democrats are looking more like Louis XVI than Tip O’Neill.

Kick in the First Family’s vacation plans for Martha’s Vineyard, and there’s a real air of Marie Antoinette & Co. retreating to idyllic gardens, while Fox News whips up revolutionary flames. The ethics charges against Representative Charles Rangel of New York are added foie gras.

Of course we see that in Minnesota politics as well; while the left sniffs down its aquiline nose at Tom Emmer’s bourgeois upbringing and suburban base, Mark Dayton is hard at work buying another election to put next to the others in his collection – with scarcely a word from the local media (which is too busy carping about the “corruption of money in politics”, apparently, to bother).

So Mark Dayton has never worked, but inherited millions and millions and millions of family wealth. Wealth made by paying low income people minimum wage to sell products made in sweatshops.

Remember Dayton’s Senatorial election? There was a picture floating around of a young (like maybe 9 years old) Dayton in his full length fur coat as he was on a family world tour. When Rod Grams was that age, he woke up at 4:30 AM each morning to milk cows. Who is the elite class?

Related, “taxing the rich” is not correct. It should be “taxing higher income people”. Rich is a present state/condition (like what Dayton has) and no one is talking about taxing that. Income is a year-to-year activity. That is what the DFL wants to confiscate.

    Chuck;

I dare say that NONE of the current batch of Daytons, Messengers, or Pritzkers ever did any “peasant work.”

Further, in other examples of left wingnut elitism, John Kerry, having been caught deliberately trying to evade MA taxes, ended up paying up, while spewing a bunch of cover up excuses. Of course, he didn’t pay the taxes with his money anyway, because it belongs to his trust fund baby wife. Further, with the domestic boat building industry in the doldrums, he chose to support his blue collar US constituents by purchasing a yacht built in New Zealand! I hope that his union goon supporters are proud.

  3. nerdbert Says:

Chuck, I’ve made the statement that I’ll believe the Democrats are against the “rich” when they start to tax wealth and not income.

  4. Jeff Kouba Says:

speaking of Kerry qua patrician, from Laffer’s WSJ column today…

“Just look at Sen. John Kerry’s recent yacht brouhaha if you don’t believe me. He bought and housed his $7 million yacht in Rhode Island instead of Massachusetts, where he is the senior senator and champion of higher taxes on the rich, avoiding some $437,500 in state sales tax and an annual excise tax of about $70,000.”

  5. Dog Gone Says:

Didn’t MAK also rise in the early hours to milk cows?

And she is the designated DFL candidate so far.

Given the number of conservatives who are angling for a renewal of the Bush tax cuts for the rich, while stats for the last three decades indicate a widening wealth and income gap between those few percent of the population who are wealthy and the rest of us…… it seems to me like it is the ordinary not-extremely wealthy who are bowing to the whims of their wealthy masters, not so much the other way around.

Those tax cuts would add………how much to the deficit? Millions? No. Billions? No. Trillions? Yup!

Lemme get this straight; folksy ruralness is a good thing with MAK, but makes Sarah Palin a “popsy”. Hm. I get so confused.

Given the number of conservatives who are angling for a renewal of the Bush tax cuts for the rich,

    Again with the thread-jacking.

The Bushtaxcutsfortherich, as the Dems prefer them pronounced, benefitted me quite directly, as a thoroughly middle-class guy with kids to feed. I’m not rich.

while stats for the last three decades indicate a widening wealth and income gap between those few percent of the population who are wealthy and the rest of us

…when the numbers involved are carefully cherry-picked. Of course, if you cherry-pick less, you find that the numbers moving THROUGH the bottom quintile have risen steadily in the past thirty years; people get OUT of poverty and into the middle class faster than before Reagan, which is really a much more compelling fact to me, having once been pretty dang poor.

Those tax cuts would add………how much to the deficit? Millions? No. Billions? No. Trillions? Yup!

Nope! Tax cuts add not one dime to the deficit if accompanied by spending cuts; after which the Laffer Curve brings much much MORE revenue into the government (which, ideally, is converted to more tax cuts, etc). Which is in fact what needs to happen.

  7. Kermit Says:

The Bushtaxcutsfortherich benefitted everyone that actually, ya know, pay taxes. I especially like that extra $500 per child credit that Nancy, Harry and Barry are going to take away.
But liberals love to penalize the poor, except when they are handing them other people’s money.

  8. Mitch Berg Says:

benefitted everyone that actually, ya know, pay taxes

Silly Kerm. The whole point is to benefit government. It must want for nothing!

  9. jimf Says:

DG- “Those tax cuts would add….how much to the deficit? …billions, no. trillions, yup!” Did i miss it when you posted this exact same sentence when moaning about Obama adding trillions to the deficit? Because I’m sure that you don’t have a double standard, do you?

  10. Kermit Says:

    Silly Kerm
Yeah, I know. When I was taught civics I took that whole “government of the people, by the people and for the people” thing seriously.
The Democrats have since reeducated me.

  11. Night Writer Says:

Rangel cuts every corner and fills every pocket; Kerry swiftly boats over to “Rhode Island” with his new yacht; Barney Frank takes great umbrage at not getting his senior discount on the boat ticket to Fire Island: and they say that liberals don’t know the value of a dollar!

  12. Ben Says:

NW, don’t forget about Maxine Waters bailing out a bank that her hubby owned massive amounts of stock in and sat on the board of directors. Of course pursuing Rangel and Waters on corruption charges is racist because the media says it is.

  13. Badda Says:

    Dog/Peev,
Isn’t it spending that adds to the deficit?

  14. Bill C Says:

Gov’t Spending is concrete and must never be diminished. It is only the gov’t revenue that is allowed to be variable (and never in a negative fashion).

At least in the mind of today’s progressive liberal.
