Beer Commons

I’ve lived in the Twin Cities for almost 25 years, now.  And for most of that time, being from North Dakota has meant I’m my entire social circle’s connection for Everclear (the full-strength 195 proof stuff, not the pantywaisted 175 proof swill they sometimes sell in Minnesota), fireworks (the NATO-graded stuff) and cheap cigarettes.

But never let it be said that Terry Keegan will miss a trend.  Apparently noting the hottest economy in the land, Terry is pandering to the people with the money next week…:

The pub is holding our first ever “NODAK NIGHT” on Friday, July 23. We are encouraging everyone with a North Dakota conection, of any kind, to come in and mingle with other North Dakotans. We are offering the first drink free for anyone with a connection.

…perhaps to curry favor and make connections for an expansion to Minot or Dickinson or someplace else out in the oil patch with low taxes and high beer consumption rates?  We dont’t know, but Terry’s no dummy.  (Marty is, but since he’s from NoDak too, I keep that quiet).

It starts at 7PM.

I’ll be bringing my JHS ’81 annual…

  1. Terry is doing this on a Friday night? Doesn’t he know that NoDaks take their weekly bath on Saturday, whether they need it or not?

  2. North Dakota currently has an $800 million dollar state budget surplus but has cutting welfare leading to a welfare border migration to Minnesota which has a multi-billion dollar state budget deficit.

  3. It’s a shame that those leaving a jobs bonanza have to compete with all the others flocking to MN for the fantastic welfare benefits.

It’s heartening to hear the migration isn’t due to the NoDak weather or it’s lack of trees. (wink)

  4. <bHe wouldn't be moving it to Minot for the water or the weather, DS!

The first time I visited Minot, I was REALLY thirsty. I was warned about the weather, but — did I mention, I was REALLY thirsty? I knew it was brackish, but I figured if I just swallowed fast enough, it might have a slight after taste, but …….. how bad could it be?

It didn’t so much ‘hit’ my stomache, but more the water bounced like it was a trampoline, and came right back up. It didn’t taste any better the second time, but it was impossible for it to taste any worse either. Minot has to have some of the worst well-water on the planet.

  5. Hm. My mom lives in Minot. Never noticed a a problem with the water.

Terry could do worse than open a branch up there. Lotsa money floating around.

  6. I only like water with most of the “local flavor” filtered out. I especially don’t like “Minneapolis Rust”.

  7. I dare say I have tried out every bar in the town of Dickinson, ND and they were all a blast….which isn’t to say I wouldn’t love to see a Keegans out there.

DG, why were you drinking the water?? You do realize they have beer if you don’t like drinks right??

  8. How much of a connection do I need to establish?

I once spent a summer driving a Kenworth full of pond water to the oil drilling rigs around Killdeer — does that count?

  9. K-Rod, I noticed that last time I was out. It used to be there was a rig on the corner of every section of land, and that’s the way it was for years. Now there’s two or three and literally everywhere you went you could see new drilling occurring.

Something change or just taking advantage of higher prices?? Meant to ask one of the locals but never got around to it.
