Just To Be Clear

For the benefit of those who mistake “chanting the chanting points on cue” for “reporting”:

Apologia

ap·o·lo·gi·a
/ˌæpəˈloʊdʒiə/ Show Spelled[ap-uh-loh-jee-uh]
–noun
1. an apology, as in defense or justification of a belief, idea, etc.
2. Literature . a work written as an explanation or justification of one’s motives, convictions, or acts.

Antonym: This piece, which doesn’t “apologize” for anything, but merely demands that a “journalist” substantiate his conclusion with in-context, accurate information, or drop it.

Glad we could clear that up.

(PS:  Saying “Suuuuure, he didn’t” isn’t the most convincing argument).

  1. I get it that you are an Emmer supporter. Are you working on Emmer’s campaign Mitch? If you are then perhaps that would be a pertinent piece of information.

I agree with you that supporting an event with purchasing tickets is not an indicator of Emmer supporting the positions of Dean. I emphatically agree with you that it is true that a photo does not indicate support – nor does it indicate disagreement either. It is what it is, nothing more nor less, and it is a huge mistake for anyone to extrapolate too much in either direction from it.

When we get to the statement in the article you linked – which I would never have read otherwise – I did notice that it appears that Emmer shares some views that seem to dovetail with Deans, quite a few. That tends to suggest more support than disagreement.

And as someone who seems to be familiar with the facts, I’m looking to you to clarify one statement here in particular — has Emmer in fact gone to Dean’s home? If so, that would suggest to me a closer and more supportive relationship between Dean and Emmer than the photo, and the tickets.

  2. “2. Literature . a work written as an explanation or justification of one’s motives, convictions, or acts.”

Using your own provided definition, your piece does seem to explain the connection – what it is and what it isn’t – between Dean and Emmer.

It fits as an apologia, not an apology, which suggests

  3. Are you working on Emmer’s campaign Mitch? If you are then perhaps that would be a pertinent piece of information.

Nope. I am not working for the Emmer campaign. I am a private citizen who supports him against a media that will over the next five months be doing its best to smear Emmer.

I emphatically agree with you that it is true that a photo does not indicate support – nor does it indicate disagreement either.

So if I get a photo taken with Keith Ellison, it could be construed as “it doesn’t show he doesn’t disagree with Mitch Berg?” Interesting.

It is what it is, nothing more nor less, and it is a huge mistake for anyone to extrapolate too much in either direction from it.

Correct. Which is why I’m asking Birkey to stop misleading his audience.

I did notice that it appears that Emmer shares some views that seem to dovetail with Deans, quite a few. That tends to suggest more support than disagreement.

I know – shocking, isn’t it, that two people on the right of the political spectrum would share some views.

But it’s the “views” of Dean’s that Birkey and the leftymedia are trying to jam down Emmer’s throat that are the issue here.

And as someone who seems to be familiar with the facts, I’m looking to you to clarify one statement here in particular — has Emmer in fact gone to Dean’s home?

Emmer has already commented on this. He stopped by on a door-knocking trip.

If so, that would suggest to me a closer and more supportive relationship between Dean and Emmer than the photo, and the tickets.

Only if you completely ignore how local politics is done – by knocking on doors and shaking hands and meeting people.

Jay Benanav, Kiki Sonnen and Paula Maccabbee all visited my house; notify Andy Birkey!

  4. Emmer’s association with Dean seems far less significant than Obama’s association with Rezko, Ayers, and Wright.

  5. I missed the door knocking tour of an area explanation. No, that is quite different from a social visit where you know someone and are seeking out their company, as distinct from a ‘cold call’ strictly business situation.

Mitch wrote: “I know – shocking, isn’t it, that two people on the right of the political spectrum would share some views.”

Shocking? No. A fair question though to ask Emmer which ones he shpares and which ones he doesn’t.

This seems very much for candidate Emmer what the right has tried – including in comments here – to make out of Rev. Wright or Bill Ayers relationship with Obama. Neither more nor less.

I didn’t agree with that attempt, and I don’t agree with the attempt to to make something more out of a relationship between Emmer and Dean.

It does suggest a certain ‘distancing’ by politicians from Dean though. The next few months should be interesting.

  6. A fair question though to ask Emmer which ones he shpares and which ones he doesn’t.

Sure. But Birkey wasn’t asking questions: He took a Brad Dean remark and a Tom Emmer donation and photo out of context to imply a connection, rather than asking. When actual journalists have actually asked, they found there was no there there. As I have reported.

This seems very much for candidate Emmer what the right has tried – including in comments here – to make out of Rev. Wright or Bill Ayers relationship with Obama. Neither more nor less.

Only if Emmer attended a church presided over by Dean for over twenty years.

It does suggest a certain ‘distancing’ by politicians from Dean though. The next few months should be interesting.

I needn’t “distance” myself from, say, Bill Maher, because I’m not close to him in any way. To say I’d NEED to “distance” myself from Maher would be not only absurd, but a “when did you stop beating your wife” type of statement.

Emmer is not, has never been, close to Dean in any way. There is nothign to “distance”. It is a manufactured story.

Emmer’s “connection” – a donation for a nonpolitical event almost two years ago, a door-knock visit, and a photo – doesn’t even require “distancing”; there is no connection, fiscal or policy or personal, between them.

    Zero!

The story only exists because the regional leftymedia has orders from its chain of command to try to smear Emmer while the DFL is busy sorting out who’s going to win the primary.

  7. Only if you completely ignore how local politics is done – by knocking on doors and shaking hands and meeting people.

I met Rep. Sandra Peterson in Derek Brigham’s garage. That means she must be fully supportive of the views expressed at Freedom Dogs. I met her again standing in line at the Snyders Drugs pharmacy. That means she must be supportive of drugs.
