Still Not Ready For Prime Time
By Mitch Berg
Obama would pull out of Iraq, and dive into Pakistan – which, with its bigger population and much-more-difficult terrain, would be a much worse place to fight.
Good one, Barack.

Ahhhh! So We invaded Iraq because it was easier than invading the real sources of the problem.
Good one, Mitch.

No such inference was made, Doug, but I know that never stops you.

Pakistan? Pakistan?! Pakistan had nothing to do with 9/11! What is Obama thinking?!
It’s pretty well confirmed that Saddam was totally in bed with Bin Laden. That’s where Al Qaeda is. That’s why they call it “Al Qaeda IN Iraq.”
Al Qaeda in Pakistan? Honestly.

The good news is that this will give all of the ChickenDoves a good reason to enlist, unless they were already training for the UN operation in Darfur.
Clearly this will be the “right war at the right time”.

So you’re not actually saying Obama is wrong. You’re just saying that it would be more difficult. I see…

Doug, Musharrif is our nominal ally in the GWOT. If he not cooperating as much as we like, hopefully there are few a diplomatic steps to take before threatening to invade his country. Besides, the UN tends to frown on invading a sovereign nation.
Hmm. I wonder if Obama has a few deep pocket Indian donors?

Seriously, Doug, don’t you realize in the post-9/11 world, you’re either with us or against us?
Pakistan is with us. Same with Saudi Arabia.
When President Bush invades a country, you can count on it being a country that’s against us. You can tell, because that’s where the terrorists are.
We’re fighting them there, so we don’t have to fight them in the countries that are with us.
That’s why the U.N. backed us in Iraq.

Your subtlety is wasted here, /jc a/k/a “Slash.” These are people who get their “information” from FOX News.
You need to use the rhetorical equivalent of a two-by-four. Or a tube sock full of wood screws. Let me know if you want to borrow Angryclown’s. We can tag-team. You whack ’em, Angryclown will hose ’em down with seltzer.

At least we know where you guys (Doug & Flash) stand — you’d prefer to invade two countries that are our nominal allies — both muslim nations, one eqipped with nuclear weapons, one the site of Islam’s holiest shrines — rather than a country whose government has sworn enmity to the US, has violated the terms of its ceasefire with UN forces, and provoked a de facto declaration of war from the US congress.
You and Obama must have taken the same foreign affairs courses in college.
August 2nd, 2007 at 12:04 pm
Oops! make that ‘Slash’.
August 2nd, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Hey, don’t lump me in with those Defeatocrats.
I want to stay on the offensive. Telling the terrorists where they can hide from us will only embolden them.
Invading our friends might just be the best way to show Iran who they’re up against.

Terry said,
“…both muslim nations, one eqipped with nuclear weapons, one the site of Islam’s holiest shrines”
And who also finances terrorist activities and who harbors and protects terrorists.
August 2nd, 2007 at 3:35 pm
So as soon as 0bama gets elected, both Doug and Slash (and AC if they dump that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell rule) will immediately enlist? I’ll never question your patriotism again…..

I assume you’re writing that from somewhere in Iraq, Master of Bation? Or are you just patrolling your post at Camp Chickenhawk, Minnesota?
August 2nd, 2007 at 4:04 pm
I’m waiting for the “Right War at the Right Time”. Glad you guys found yours along with the right commander-in-chief.
I’d suggest the Marines for your upcoming enlistment. You’ll have a better chance of bagging OBL personally.
August 2nd, 2007 at 7:31 pm
So, Doug, do I put you down as being in favor of invading Pakistan and Saudi Arabia? ‘Cuz if Bush does either in the next 18 months I know your howls of anger will shake the rafters.
August 2nd, 2007 at 8:09 pm
No Terry but you can put me down for opposing selling 20 billion in weapons to Saudi Arabia – some weapons which will in all likelihood will be traded or sold to militant groups to use against the US.
As for Pakistan, I’m sure I’m already down on record as saying we should have sent special forces into Pakistan and eliminated al Qaida and fleeing Taliban forces when we had the chance.
Instead, tough guy Bush goes after an impotent Iraq and does a half assed job in Afghanistan.
August 2nd, 2007 at 8:36 pm
So when you responded to my comment on the silliness of threatening to invade pakistan or Suadi Arabia:
“…both muslim nations, one eqipped with nuclear weapons, one the site of Islam’s holiest shrines”
And who also finances terrorist activities and who harbors and protects terrorists.
You were blowing smoke? What exactly was your point? The problem with you guys on the left is you’ve always been so focused on the current state of affairs in Iraq as the result of the Bush administration’s incompetence and/or neocon hubris you’ve forgotten completely why Bush and congress voted to go to war with Saddam’s Iraq.
The peace after the Iraq War of ’92 was the result not of a peace treaty, but a conditional ceasefire. You probably don’t remember (lefties seem to be ignorant even of recent history), but Bush and Powell’s State Department spent much of 2002 and the early part of 2003 in diplomatic maneuvers designed to convince the UN general assembly and security council that Iraq had violated the terms of the 1992 ceasefire and that its non-compliance was ongoing. Believe it or not many of these violations had nothing to do with WMD.
You can’t just send your troops into an unwilling host country and enforce your idea of justice these days, especially if your goal is to satisfy an internal political body rather than the international community.
What would Doug’s (or Obama’s) UN ambassador’s excuse to the UN be? That we were a bunch of tough guys and we knew we could get away with it and the little brown people couldn’t do anything about it but seethe?
Mitch is right. You guys aren’t ready for prime time.

In other news, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has been taking policy advice from frequent SITD commenter, Doug. Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a “phony war” on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.
A more effective approach, said Gingrich, would begin with a national energy strategy aimed at weaning the country from its reliance on imported oil and some of the regimes that petro-dollars support.

In other news, Doug joins Newt Gingrich in his call for der totale Krieg against Islamic extremism ‘ . . . more must be done to marshal national resources to combat Islamic militants at home and abroad and to prepare the country for future attack.” Doug & Newt insisted.
