Absolute Moral Authority

By Mitch Berg

Kathy at Cake Eater Chronicles writes what needs to be written:

Please, please, please hire Sigourney Weaver to act in something so she doesn’t have to demean herself with these pitiful DirecTV commercials.

It’s great that she has a sense of humor about herself and the character that brought her worldwide fame, but really. The schtick behind these commercials instantly went straight to hell the minute DirecTV hired El Slutta herself, Pam Anderson, to be in one. Signourney is better than this. Hire her.

On the one hand, the spot is a lot better than the Charlie Sheen/Pam Anderson spots.

On the other – it’s Sigourney Friggin’ Weaver.

If we can put a man on the moon and a Mac into a  package the size of a cell phone, we can keep Sigourney Weaver working.  Right?

I’ve had a Sigourney Weaver crush since “Alien.” More of a “classy beauty” rather than a “classic beauty” and who has aged well – and that voice! Her narration was one of the highlights of the overall very impressive “Planet Earth” series on Discovery.

  2. SteveM Says:

Nah … the only time she was ever hot was in “Ghostbusters.” Pretty manly-looking most of the time after that, IIRC.

Weaver has 2 films completed right now – and about 5 or 6 either in post-production or in the process of filming (one in particular I’m really excited about – a TV movie called Gypsy and Me – about Gypsy Rose Lee – with Sigourney playing an aging Gypsy).

Her career is just fine for a woman her age. I hear folks like Gene Hackman (one of my favorite actors) doing voiceovers for commercials and think – well, that’s a nice paycheck for some easy work. Good for you.

Hey, DirecTV has to be paying out some serious coin for the ads. After all, Jessica Simpson was doing ads for them within the past year and she ain’t exactly living check to check.

I remember seeing Teri Garr in a LOCAL commercial in Illinois – not even a national spot – and a friend of mine was like, “That is so sad … she was so great …” And she is great. But the thing is – she has MS, and actors need to work a certain amount of weeks to maintain health insurance thru the union – and Teri Garr never pulled in the huge salaries that major movie stars get – so she needs to work. I am definitely sad that the brilliant Teri Garr is not “used” in movies anymore – she’s one of my faves, but she’s doing what she has to do now to manage her illness. So I think – good. Good for her.

    hahahahahaha!!! So so funny.

Sheila’s right about Teri Garr. (She does a commercial for a lite rock station in NYC. Sad.)

And of course Mitch and Night Writer are correct about Sigourney Weaver. Steve M., by the way, is addicted to crack cocaine.

I give you the panty scene from Alien:

I actually agree with AC. I really hate when that happens…..

  10. Paul Says:

I was surprised when I saw Weaver in The Village. She wasn’t in any of the trailers, and got virtually no billing.

Garr did one for the lite rock station here in the Twin Cities a few years ago.

Okay, sombody square me with this DirecTV ad thing, a’cuz I’m kinda what momma calls slow. Isn’t there a certain amount of computer generated graphics to those spots? I can see Pam Anderson’s ad being on the level, but the William Shatner stuff had to be, at the very least, digitally enhanced… if not outright computer created. And if you watch the Sigourney Weaver/Alien spot, there seems to be some “tics” that would indicate some degree of CGI.
Just a thought, and, bear in mind that I was astonished to learn that Liberace favored fellas. I guess I just ain’t too quick on the uptake!

  13. Terry Says:

Alien was released in 1979, Malcomania. No CGI then, unless they did it on an Altair.

  14. Mitch Says:

    Terry/Mal’ia,

I never watched the “Making of Alien” reel, but I suspect there wasn’t much in the way of CGI.

But I bet there was quite a bit in the commercial, dubbing the spot in over the old Alien footage.

    Paul/AC and maybe Red,

She was in a light rock radio promo spot that was basically a campaign that a ton of light-rock stations bought a few (10-ish) years back. That happens a lot; either a big chain (like Clear Channel) cuts a spot for all of its stations in a given format, or a ton of stations with the same format buy the same promo and put their own tag and graphics on it. The Garr spot looked like one of those.

  15. SteveM Says:

Crack? Nah … she looked good in Aliens, sure, but she didn’t get “hot” until Ghostbusters. Furthermore, it should be noted that Aliens came out in 1979, GhostBusters in 1984, IIRC (I’d look but my employer doesn’t allow entertainment websites.) My comment still stands as it pertained only to movies after Ghostbusters.

She is, however, a terrific actress nonetheless. Just not hot on par with, say, Marisa Tomei or my current crush, Jennifer Connelly.

nor Linda Hamilton. I wasted many hours watching that stupid damn Beauty and the Beast show in the late 80s, just to watch her. Argh!
